It is going to be a surprise to many of the people living in the southern, western or eastern parts of Wisconsin to find what a bustling city Wausau is, when they visit os this summer during either of the conventions. Of course they are beginniug to hear about it now. through the various movements that have had their birth in Wausau, but eight years ago, when I first began to attend teachers’conventions in*cities of the Fox River valley, in Milwau kee, or in southern Wisconsin cities, the superintendents and principals used to ask me such questions as these: “Let’s see ! Just where is Wau sau ? Way up north somewhere isn’t it !” “Have you a high school!’’ “Twelve thonsaud people! You mean 1200 don t you !” “Do you ever have institutes TANARUS” “Over 250 teachers in the city and county! You don’t mean it ! ’ “Isn’t the pine all gone!” “Any Indians t” When we took the pains to set them right—the divine right of pedagogs—they shook their heads, aud said rather lukewarmly: “Well, we should like to see it sometime.’’ Iu speaking about this matter a couple of weeks ago before the school for institute conductors I told them that the name “Wausau” was an Indian name, given our town by the Hon. W. D. Mclndoe over fifty years ago, and that it meant “far away,” but that the glowing imagry indulged in by our papers and citizens had led some to interpret it as meaning that its citizens were “way off.” I continued, saying that there was certainly a disposition among my fellow tow nsmen to swear by the city aud its hospitable people, but they need not think that every Wausau fat her leads his boy out to the druid woods, much as Han nibal’s father led him to the altar, aud made him swear that Rome should he doomed, with this alteration iu the sau mast be lioomed.” Avery fine institute exercise on Duluth as a commercial center, had been presented by Prof. Mit chell, I continued, and I felt very much like the Minneapolis aider man, a Norwegian, who spoke in favor of a motion to have the Bible thrown out of the public schools. “I tank lam in favor of putting the Bible out of our schools.” He said: “I would throw it out of every one of the rooms, I read it through two or tree times and I find St. Paul is mentioned a good many times, but not one word for Minneapolis.” So while Duluth should get her just dues, Wausau should not be overlooked, and I took great pleasure in having the courtesy extended me by the state superintendent to say a few words for Wausau aud the joint meeting of the Northwestern Wis consin and of Northeastern Wis consin Teachers’ associations which is to be held there early in the fall. I told them of wliat a beautiful city we had to show them, how nature has blessed it, what man has done for it. aud what pleasure our people would take in enter taining them while here. That free entertainment would be ac corded the ladies in attendance met with hearty approval, but when I added that fourteen teach ers had beeu married off under my administration the ladies present seemed ready to start at once for the metropolis of the Wisconsin river valley. A recital of w liat a commodious high school building we had. of how easily we could accommodate the general sessions in our magnifi cent assembly room, and what ideal rooms for the section meetings would be our gymnasium with its gallery, our science lecture room, our manual training rooms and our class rooms on the first lloor, gave them a more vivid picture of our building as it actually is than they had had befoie. That they would receive a cor dial welcome and enjoy whole hearted hospitality I did not need to argue, for this characteristic of Wausau’s citizenship has long beeu bruited abroad. Care would be taken to place everybody happily aud do it with as little red tape as possible. The meetings would be so conducted and the seating so arranged that the welfare of oar guests should be the first consider ation. From the remarks made after the meeting I came to the con clusion that we should have a big attendance not only from onr own sectious, but from all over the state. The southern section has already had its meeting, so mauy of the southern teachers are coming up to get a fresh breeze from the forests of Marathon. We may confidently look forward to such a gathering of the educational forces of our state as has never l>efore been .seen in Northern Wisconsin. In fact, I should not l>e surprised if our attendance exceeded some of the state meetings at Milwaukee. Here is an opportunity to | present Wausau’s claims tor recog- I nitions in that phase that appeals to substantial men, the phase of education. They will see here the best high school building in the state, and mauy excellent modem ward building; they will see ade quate and generous provision made in play grounds, and, best of all, they will see and can investigate on the ground the most helpful institution for the improvement of the country schools yet devised— ! the Marathon County Trainiug j School for Teachers—embodying the ’’Marathon Plain.” So let us plant trees, clean np the yards, put out flowers, grow vines and gieet as only Wausau can the conventions that are to meet in our city this summer. Get teachers and editors to love a city and its future is assured. Karl Mathik. The‘'Hottest Coon in Dixie.'* failed to show up in Wausau on Friday even- ! ing at the Grand Opera House.” Taz Sale Notice.
