The ladies of the Universalist, church are holding a commencement sale and supper in the church this afternoon. The supper is from 5:30 on. Frank B. Fullmer planted a large number of bass and pike fry in the Eau Claire river the past week. He is bound to make his resort first class and attrac tive in more ways than one. The G. C Smith Piano Co.’s branch store of which Jake Paff is manager, will be moved from its piesent loca tion June 1, to the Paff building on Third street lately vacated by Nablo, the tailor. Work on the East hill water extension was resumed yesterday. The work will be vigorously pushed to comple tion. All of the material for the stand pipe and pumping bouse is at hand, so there need be no delay. His wife has been here for some time. Art Chellis, sub mail carrier, will leave the city June 1, for Manitou Springs. Col., for his health. He has been sick since last fall and expects to remain in Colorado for a year or more. He intends to spend most of his time in hunting and hshing. The condition of A J Plowman, who has been ill for about two weeks from a mild attack of typhoid, is improving every day, according to information from Elderon received today. His temperature has been normal for the last two days —Wittenberg He has many friends in this city. Carl Schmidt, better known as “the count,’’ started last week for Hamburg, Ger., where he will remain. He had been in this country about two years. He was dubbed “the count” from the “perpendicular" or kaiser style appear ance of hn mustache, and the mixing of a peculiar style of vanity with bis actions. A damage case entitled Jazdewski vs. the Barker & Stewart Lbr. Cos., tried twice a* Ashland, has been settled by the defendant paying the complainant $6,000, it is said. When the Wausau concern was formerly in business in Ashland the complainant was in its employ when permanently disabled. He secured a large judgment at each trial. Albert Pregont, residing at 506 Elm street, was arrested last Tuesday even ing by Undersheriff John Sell on an abandonment charge preferred by Pregont’s wife. They secured a mar riage license on April 17 last and getting a dispensation from the court the same day they were at once married. Three days later he deserted her and at pres ent she and their infant child are in destitute circumstances. He left town on April 20 and remained away until recently. When arraigned in court Wednesday morning a postponement of examination was taken for one week, be furnishing SSOO bail for his appearance. Telephone No. 1782., nl2-tf Sixty-six rattlesnakes were killed near Baraboo one day last week, not withstanding the fact that at the last election that town voted “dry.” While digging a grave near the cemi - tery chapel Friday, the sexton, Geo. Steltz, struck a strata of frost, which the spring rains had failed to melt. Among those who wm be graduated this spring from the Stevens Point state normal school are the Misses Lois C. Bessey and Margaret McGrath of this city. A teachers’ examination was held Saturday in the office of the couDty superintendent. That official con ducted the same. About thirty teach ers were present. Rudolph Wagner, editor of Der Deutsche Vorkaempfer, a New York publication, will come to Wausau in the near future to address the German bodies affiliated with the National Ujerman-American alliance. Jos. Zimmer, a resident of the west side, was arrested Saturday at the in stance of Rein hold Koehler. The lat ter charges that Zimmer, while hand ling a revolver last Thursday, threat ened to kill the complainant. Zim mer’s examination was set for next Friday. The state’s fish car, Badger, is mak ing a tour of the state at present and will distribute 100,000,000 fish at differ ent species. The fry is from two to eight weeks old and is taken from the v *tcLcries at Minocqua, Delafield and Oshkosh. In June there will be another distribution. J. Weiland, a resident of Wausau, fell from a moving train at Marathon City Wednesday and suffered a scalp wound which required several stitches to close. Dr. Barber, of that village, who attended him, brought him here that evening in an automobile. He was taken to St. Mary’s hospital. Prof. J. M. (Joyner, an uncle of Dr. S. N. Wiison, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, died at his home in Hopkinsville, Ky., on Sunday, May 17. Mr. Coyner spent some time in Wausau several years ago, with Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, and made many warm friends here and he was beloved by all who knew him. The Nickel Hardware and Supply Cos. has been incorporated and will conduct a store in the Anderes building on Ciarke’s island where Luebschow & Nickel have heretofore been doing busi ness. The capital stock is $20,000 and the incorporators are Robt. J Nickel, Herman H. and Fred M. Genrich. The latter two are former residents of the town of Texas. The P. C. Hart lodge, 657 L Brother hood of Railroad Trainmen, gave its fifth annual dance in Elks’ hall last Wednesday evening. There was a very large attendance and the dance was a success in every way. A neat souvenir badge was given to everyone', compliments of the Elgin Watch Cos. They were in the form of an enameled watch dial with two white ribbons at tached. J. W. Cappy died Friday evening at the home of T. Sands, 622 First street. He had been ill for a number of months. He came here from Merrill tw< years ago and opened the Owl bowling alley. He was forced to give up business when his last illness came on. De ceased was fifty-six years of age. He was twice married, both wives having preceded him to the unknown and be left no near relatives in this section. The funeral was held yesterday. Rev. F. H. Brighi ic conducted the same. On Thusrday evening the annual meeting of the congregation of the Universalis", church was held in the auditorium of the church. Reports of the year’s work were read and officers elected for the ensuing year as follows: Moderator —W. B. Scholfield. Secretary—G. D. Bartz. Treasurer—E. B. Thayer. Collector —J. N. Mauson.
