OKAKGtt COUNTY onSERVEft. HILLS BOKO UGH, X. C. SATURDAY Fkb. 9. IfesT. f Entered at the Post Office at Hills oorouqh, AT, C, as second class , matter. JOSEPH A. HAURIS, Pabli.ber nd Owner. CORN FOR X EMI A SKA. Mr. C. S. Cooley, who wan ap pointed to receive contribution for the Nebraska sufferer, reports thai be hat already received more tban 200 bushels of corn, and that a good many others have been 'delayed io bringing in ihVir contributions on account of bad roads. We have been asked to request all who wish to contribute anything, to bring it in at once, so that it can be sent on to Nebraska a early as possible. A COTTON FACTORY. Every day we see or hear of peo ple leaving tl.ii county for other places to finl employment. A gen tleman told us oue day last week that some eighty or ninety neonle s have left Iittla River township in the last six months. Soniething must be done to give the people em ployment. One cotton lactory would give employment to several hun dred. There is no doubt about our having thy right kind of men to build and operate a cotton factory succciiHlully, and the best way to get a factory is tor thene men to take hold of it It takes money and brains to build factories, and we have plenty ot both in HilUboro and Orange county to do a great deal more than u have done. We would bo tclad to hear from othern on this subject. Two Liv.-.s Saved. She is milking 36 to 38 pounds-a day and making 17 pound ot butter a week." This is a great cow. She has the blood of Tor mentor, Oonan, Soomassie, Kath ietta and Ida of St Lambert. And there is nothing better. I am proud of this Carolina cow. But I write how ot another 6tock farm, the Occoneechee. Everybody knows thai this is the farm of Col. J. S. Carr. I speut a holiday look ing it over, and if anyone reading this letter has an eye lor stock, and can get a holiday, let me suggest that you spend it on the Occonee chee lrm at Hillsboro. There is a large barn for horse and a larger barn tor the Jersey cow Professor Irby, of lheAgri-j cultural and Mechanical Cnllprn t. signed the latter. I have never seen a barn equal to it. There Is comfort, convenience and absolutely no waste ot anything. There are more than fifty standard-bred horses on this farm. Three of these are daughter ot Pamlico. There is a son ot Kremlin, and be cost Mr. Carr over o00 before he was loaled. There are Kentucky bred and Carolina bred horses, "fine as split tilk," they say at the farm, and I suppose they are rijht. The Jerseys came next. There are about thuty of them ; 'Meridale Buffer'' heads the herd. He has the blood of Matdda 4th. This was a great cow. She gave 16,15a gallon of milk i' one year. Col. Carr jire ler Maryland to Tennesee Jerseys. The sheep are the largest I have seen. There in a iarge flock ot Shropshire and a small flock ot Dortelt. The hogs arc black Essex and red Jersey. Poultry is a specialty hero. There are nine breeds ot chickens, two ot turkeys and two of ducks. Think ot a turkey that will weigh 37 pounds, and a chicken hen weighing 8 pounds, taking the prize in the New York poultry show, and costing twenty dollar. . .iiiiir 10 advertise the Occoneechee tar in I arn writiDi; t- A.,, t p . i hlillKIl 1 hu ut'11 in kiuiitilii Inrm The total number of men who served in the Union army during the war is placed by carefully 1 e- visel tiguresat'J rJ4,m?
