Judje Starbuck, in his charge to the grand jury at Wilkes court, by request, .gave his opinion concerning the tax law passed by the lat Lejzis lalore. The Chronicle gives the fol lowing points from his explanation : I. All tares become due the first Monday in September. 1. The Sheriff is required to be in bis office in Wilkesboro during the mouth of September for the purpose of receiving tares. 3. During the month of October the Sheriff mast spend cue day at least in some htated place m each township, after giving fifteen daye notice,ttor the purpose of receiving taxes. 4. Alter the first day of Novem ber the Sheriff can levy upon prop erty for taxes. 5. Charlotte Observer : The graded sohools of Charlotte opened last Monday, and in yesterday's paper it was stated thai the attendance was 1,706 1,073 at the w hite school and 633 at the colored, an Increase at the former school of 173 over the opening day last year, and of 1221 the latter.
