STOCK SPECULATION Interest Still Centers About the Union Pacific, THIS STOCK ADVANCES WALL STREET HAS THINGS ITS WAY, AND THL SALE WILL NOT BE POSTPONED Stocks and Bonds Showed Considerath Activ ity-Trading in Union Pacific Absorbed More Than a Quarter of the Total Sales -Cotton Still Declining. New York, Oct. 26.—Dry groods arc ■quiet in all lines again this week. It was hoped that an increase in interest in some grades would be noticed, but so far this has failed to materialize. The lack of seasonable weather has un doubtedly had much to do with the current dullnes, but the reticence of buy ers is also attributed to no small de gree to the current belief that the low price of cotton gives manufacturers of cotton goods an opportunity to make money at current prices, »»d that there will be many opportunities to purchase before prices are advanced. Woolen goods on the other hand, are well sup ported, and the utmost confidence is evinced by sellers as to the future of the woolen goods trade. The demand for seasonable goods is well sustained. In staple cottons the local first hand market is still dull. Print cloths remain inac tive at the low price prevailing, 2% cents. COTTON. New York, Oct. 26. —The cotton mar ket, after opening easy at a decline of 4 to 8 points, showed considerable irre gularity and was generally weak, public cables being against the market and pri vate cables still more so. At the same time the movement of cotton was ex ceeding estimates and spot buyers, for eigners even more than American con sumers, were not inclined to anticipate wants. Covering in the early afternoon carried prices up a little, but there was renewed liquidation iu the afternoon and the prices returned to about the lowest level of the session, with the tone finally easy at a net decline of 6 to 7 points and sales of 141,100 bales. New York, Oet. 2G. —Trading iu stocks during the early part of the day was re stricted in volume and the fluctuations in prices was narrow and irregular. The latter part of the day saw quite an in crease in activity and a rise of prices to the highest of the day, the declines be fore the close being small. Union Pa cific continued to be the centre of inter est in the market and ruled above yes terday’s close all day and closed this af ternoon at near the best and 2\i above last night’s close. The opening gain was due largely to sympathy with London, which sent a higher quotation for the stock. The belief gained ground as the day advanced that the government and the re-organization committee would come to an agreement on the basis of the committee’s expressed intention to L»id the full amount of the government ciatna on tlje main line. The fact that this bid feave£H4<i government’s claim ot over $13,000,000 on‘'th€L. K aD sa3 Pa cific unprovided for and the iUisqfs that increased bids might? be made by other interests which would for this indebted- ness caused some feverishness in the speculation at this time, as the accept ance of such a bid by the government would endanger the whole plan of re organization in spite of the assertion of the committee that they were prepared to carry it out even if the government should bid in the Pacific. Rut late in the day reports form Washington as sumed quite a definite form that the Cabinet had resolved to accept the com mittee's intended bid as a minimum guarantee and withdraw their request for a permanent foreclosure sale of the line. A fall of B*4 points in the price of the Kansas Pacific consol sixes trust receipts was the forecast of the news received later from Washington that the committee’s agreement with the government included an assent to post ponement of the Kansas Pacific sale, presumably with a view to giving the government an opportunity to secure a bid on this property that would provide for a part or the whole of its claim. As the chances of a separate bid on the Kansas Pacific are considered remote the price of the consol sixes rallied 4 per cent, and closed at 92. Trading in Union Pacific absorbed over a quarter of the total sales of all stocks. Outside of the Grangers, Sugar, Chicago Gas and Bay State Gas business was of verr small proportions. The tone of the market was strong, however, and mate rial recoveries from yesterday’s decline were made averaging a point in the Grangers and other leading stocks. Bay State Gas was weak. Decline in rates for call money and some very favorable statements of railroad earnings for the third week in October assisted the re covery. There were purchases for Lon don account of some of the favorite in ternational stocks, incident to the settle ment day on the London Exchange. This nerved to keep up the price of Louisville in spite of the continued decrease in its earnings on account of the yellow fever quarantine. Pittsburg, S. C. and St. L. was active and strong and rose at one time two per cent, but reacted slightly. Michigan Central was conspicuous for an advance of 2%. The latter tone for Americans in London was taken as a reflecting decline of apprehension over the Spanish relations with the United States. Dealings in railway bonds were not large but the tone was firm with the exception of the Kansas Pacific bonds above noted. Total sales, $1,150,000. United States new 4’s were advanced % bid. Total sales of stocks to-day were 24R.- 700 shares, including C. B. and Q., 22,- 989; New York Central, 6,151; Northern Pacific, preferred, 9,235; Rock Island, 7,895; St. Paul, 18,499; Union Pacific, 00.910; Bay State Gas. 14,100; Chicago Gas, 10,015; Sugar, 5,700. LONDON. New York, Oct. 26.—The Evening Post’s London financial cablegram says; The stock markets opened dull but closed firm. Americans were quite a dollar above the lowest, with a good un dertone. Money was dear at the settle ment, because of the general rise in interest, but the account was really quite moderate. Contangos on Ameri cans were about 4*4 per cent, though leaders at one time tried to exact more. In spite of the dearness of money and a possible rise in the Bank of England’s discount rate this week, the outlook for the market is. not altogether unfavor able. The Paris and Berlin markets were dull. NEW YORK CLOBING STOCKS-WEST. Atchison. 13*4 do. pref 28 % BAO 1344 Can Pac 79 N Can 8o 55 Cen Pac 16 k C&O 21 X Chicago Alton.. • • 16^ C.
