C., Oct. 30. —(Special.)— This has indeed been a busy week with the tobacco trade. Large quantities of the weed have been sold and prices I have been high. The farmers go away cheerful and happy and it is a real pleas ure to look upon them. At present, prices the crop of JS97 will bring a large amount of money to this section. W. H. Sumineral, the great insurance man, is in the city. Mr. L. O. Parrish is here from Suf folk, Va., business. Tomorrow the law permits killing of birds and Durham sportsmen are pre paring for much sport. Rev. W. C. T.vree is to assist Dr. Brown in a series of meetings in the First Baptist church of Winston. The Graham Comedy Company failed to reach Durham yesterday. The cause of the failure has not yet been learned. It was a grievous disappointment to many Durham people. They would have been greeted with a full house. Mrs. T. M. Kirkland is quite sick at her home on Morris street. Durham is to have a dog show Mon day and Tuesday. Active steps are being taken looking to the building of the “Braxton-Crav en Hall” out at Trinity Park, which, when completed, will be a great addi tion to the park and a just tribute to the memory of a great man. The Char lotte Observer says Dr. T. N. Ivey and Messrs. W. R. Odell and S. J. Durham have been in that city consulting the architects with a. view of obtaining a place and cost of errection. As is known this hall is to be built by the alumni and it is proposed to give it a seating capacity of 1,200. A large subscription has already been made, sufficient to guarantee that the amount necessary, SIO,OOO, will be forthcoming. Pronounced ft Success Notwithstanding j the Drawbacks—The Town on a Boom, j ! Rocky Mount, N. C., Oct. 30.—(Spe cial.) —'The Fair here closed yesterday. All things considered, it can Ik? said that it was a success. The bad weather the first part of the week interfered very much with the racing. All races were declared off by the Association Wednes day, but on Thursday the Association put up a purse of SIOO and there were three very interesting races, two trot j ting and one running. The first trotting i race was won by Rivott, second by Lucy . Dawson. j There were some very fine specimens of agricultural products. The ladies’ de partment was well represented, with all kinds of fine needle work. The pantry I supply just fairly made one’s mouth I water. The art department was nrtist jically and beautifully arranged, and the [paintings, portraits, drawings and cray ons shown were superior to those usu ally seen on exhibition. The crowd on Thursday was estimat ed from 2,500 to 3,000, and while the crowd was not large on Friday, there was a fine trotting race that was en joyed by all who saw it. The trnppeze i acting and wire walk in front of the j grand stand was very good and very much appreciated by the crowd. Secretary Wilkinson, aided by nil of the officers of the association, has worked hard against many difficulties to make tlie Fair a success and they certainly deserve credit for doing ns well Ins they have done under the circum stances. j The young men of Rocky Mount well know ihow to entertain visitors to their [enterprising little city on an occasion like this, and on Thursday and Friday Plights, in Davis’ warehouse, they danc ed the german till the wee hours or morn. At one time Thursday night then 1 were as many as forty couples on the floor. The First Regiment band of Richmond furnished delightful music for the Fair and the Kills. Notwithstanding 5 Urgent cotton, Rocky Mount is steadily forging for ward’to growth and prosperity. Piles of tobacco are daily coming in, and build ing going on all the time in various parts of the town. The Rocky Mount high school which, by the way, is one of the best in the State, marched 118 pupils in the Fair grounds Thursday. Although the weath er was bad and quite a number of bar -1 rooms handy, the best of order prevail ed during the entire week. Doubtless [this is due to the fact that the police I foree of Rocky Mount is composed of such thoroughly competent men I cannot refrain before closing this communica tion from suggesting to the officers and members of the Rocky Mount Associa tion to do one of two things that I be lieve would be of a decided advantage to the Fair; either hereafter allow no barroom on the Fair grounds or move it away from under the grand stand. 20.000 do* n eggs wanted weekly.
