Brown cottons are in quiet request, Che char acter of the demand differing in no de cree from that which has hitherto pre vailed. In wide goods the market is less easy than was the ease u month ago, hut the demand is still quiet. Coarse colored cottons are quiet in all grades and without feature. Print cloths show unchanged conditions. No sales of extras at 2% cents were reported to day. In prints ami ginghams no change, of moment is reported. Joblters have had fairly busy day, there 1 icing many buyers in town. COTTON. New York. March 14. —Early news re flected better condition's. N<*tv York March 14. —The stock un«l 1 ioiml markets wore strong throughout to-day. Different opinions were offered ns to the cause of tiiis and probahily all Jiad some truth in them. That the ex cess, of buoyancy was a surprise to many professional traders even to those who expected some natural reiMnind from Saturday's excessive depression, >vas evident. Trices of Americans were tulva ncisl in lamdon Ix'fore the opening here. This was the more notable on ac count of tine acute depression of the Spanish government fours which fell 2 1 /t in London on Torts selling and showi'd an extreme decline of 1% in Paris. Ihe ewii'se of these bonds has been looked to ns a tru - index of the diplomiatiic ni lation between the I’nited States and Spain. This discrepancy might mean that capital looks favorably upon the excellent financial and industrial condi tions in the United States tin spite of the Ganger of war or it might mean that the acute financial distress of the Span ish government detracts from the value of its bonds in spite of the chance of jieaoe. It is not to be lost sight of that United States 1 winds in the local market declined U. per cent In the bid price in face of the strength of all other securi ties. It is i>ossiblc, however, that the stiffening of the money rate may have accounted for this movement. Certain il .s that there was a very large covering of short contracts which had been left open over Sunday on the belief that some netv and dangerous development was imminent ‘in our relations with Spain. The firmness of prices was sus tained to the close. This was a demon stration that the underlying strength of business conditions in the country would quickly bring about a recovery of prices upon any relaxation of tho tension over the Cuban question, (lohl continues to ■be engaged abroad for imjnort, to-day's announcements aggregating considerably over $4,000,000. The fall in the rate of exchange on Paris and Berlin and the relative steadiness of tine rate on London indicates where the pressure for .gold is lieing felt and there was a. response hi tine stiffening of the money hate in Paris and Berlin. Money is still moving to the interior from this point, and receipts of gold had no effect to-day in easing the money market. Over $1,000,000 will he withdrawn from the market to-morrow and covered into the Treasury for the second payment on account of the Kan sas Pacific sale. Nearly all active stocks are from 2 to over .'{ ]>er cent higher as a result of the day's trading. Prices of railroad bonds rose in sym pathy with stocks but the ovehwhelm ing proportion of the dealings was in the Atchison adjustments and the Un ion Pacific new 4’s. Total sales $2,700,- 000. The tract contains two thousand three hundred and fifty-seven acres, about one-fifth of which is table land and rich creek bottom, the uplands are gently undulating; not a hill on the place. Soil is a clay loam and very pro ductive, the bottoms are as fine timothy lands as any in the State and produce heavy crops of grain. The farm is beautifully watered by springs and streams. There are two residences (about one and a half miles apart); one contains eleven large rooms, several halls, closests, porches, &c., the other six rooms. There are the usual farm houses such as barns, tenant houses, granary, &o. Some excellent fruit—Apples, Peaches, Cherries. Grapes, &c. Th'erje is not a more delightful home or healthier one in the State. I am too old to manage it, and to make a speedy sale offer it at the low price of tyelve dollars per acre, less than I have ever offered it. This tract would cut up into a dozen fine farms, but I wish to sell it as a whole. Deer, Turkey, Quail, &c., iu abundance. JOHN C. GRIFFIN. Owner, Petersburg, Va. The above Is from the “Turf Field and Farm,” of February 11th, ’9B. It is a fairly good description of the farm called “Mill Quarter.” I purchased it last fall and am now the owner instead of J. O. Griffin. I have offered it for .-ale at seven dollars and fifty cents per acre instead of tyelve. Adjoining lands are held at higher prices. Oapt. Griffin was offered twenty-five thous and dollars cash for the farm and re fused it, holding them at $15.00 per acre. There is a fine opportunity for some one to buy this place, cut it up into small farms and make five thousand dollars of farms and make five thousand dollars clear of all expense in a short time. J.
