A RALLY IN COTTON Buying Orders from Liver-, pool and the South PUSHED PRICES UP FAST DRY COODS SHOW SLIOHT (JAINS FROM DAY TO DAY. RULK OF TRADE RESULT OF MAIL ORDERS An Improved Shipping Demand for the Cash Article Advanced the Price of Futures in the Wheat Pit-Lard and Ribs Were Higher. New York, August 23.—'The dry goods market shows slight gains from day to day. Although there are many buyers in town, tin* bulk of the business is the result of mail orders. These orders are generally for seasonable specialties rath er than staple goods and results show that the size of them has increased. The store trading is mainly in the jobbing houses and is confined to somewhat conservative limits. The most encouraging feature of the market is the trading in print cloths and their situation. COTTON MAIIKET. New York, August 23.—Following yes terday’s sharp slump there was a rally of S to It) points in cotton futures this morning with trading active and general. Evidences of a better l'et'ling in the Liverpool market sent shorts to cover early in the session, which, with buy ing orders from Liverpool and the South sent prices up almost as fast as they fell yesterday. The opening of the market was steady with initial salt's 2 to t points over the final figures of lass night. By midday she hull crowd had scored an advance of 7 to 10 points. In the afternoon prices sagged off several points tinder a bearish interpretation of the weekly government weather report, and some realizing by smaller bulls. The trading fell off considerably, hut picked up near the close. The market finished the day steady at a net gain of 2 to G points. NEW YORK. New York, August 23.—There .was nothing in the general situation either in the political or the business world to aeeount for a reaction in stocks to <dtiy. 'l'lie market was simply over bought , and was subjected to a process of testing, which, whether designed to do so or not, inevitably reduced prices to tin* true basis of value. Yesterday’s heavy profit taking on the part of some of the powerful interests who had been Iniying stocks in she confidence that they would advance in price, led tin* way naturally to to-day’s movement. It became evident at the opening that the strong support of the leaders had been withdrawn, in the lira tigers even the outside buying, which lias so eagerly absorbed these stocks for some time past, showed a marked diminution. There were even sidling orders in the commission houses for outside account, thus showing that a large part of the recent public interest has been for spec ulative account, hut the outside specula tive public failed to show the aggres sive confidence in their holdings recent ly manifested by the powerful hull clique. Neither had they the combined resources at their command to come in and support stocks on the declining market. There was a very marked falling off in activity after the mid-day shaking out suggestive of a pausing f<> take breath. The day’s net declines are mostly small, but the greater part of the day’s busi ness was done at prices materially lower than the closing. The disposition to take profits was also manifest in the bond market where price changes were irregular on a decreased volume of business. Total sales -53.- 415.000.
