market lias again been quiet so far as
actual business go s, but some good
sized bids for brown cottons have been
turned down at lower prices. Brown
bleached and coarse cottons continue
firm. Prints arc also very firm, with
fair demand for both stuples and fancy
goods. .Ginghams scarce in desiuubb
styles. Print cloths very quiet through
out, but first hand sellers still siiff on
[trices. Worsted dress goods firm with
fair business doing. Silks strong and
advancing.' Good business doing in job

COTTON.
New York. March 8. —The cotton mar
ket failed to improve more than one !
point advance, secured on the opening
call, in the face of bullish cables, more
or less bad weather in the South and
the iist of favorable factors which havt
been the stock in trade of the bull in
terest so long, including the talk of
wet lands. backward planting, good
trade in cotton cloths, orders ahead
at most spinning centers, firm Southern
markets, etc. This failure was due to
a mor, or less steady stream of liquida
tion orders, -aid to be in good part from
Wall Street; although the sidling soon
extended. Later it was claimed that
certain Wall Street lnxvple were buying
again: but as a rule liquidation was the
ordir of the day. The selling pressure
was childly directed against August and
the nearer positions. The market closed
steady at a net decline of Tda 7 points
oi> near positions while the later deliver
ies w. re unchanged to 2 points lower.

STOCKS AND BONDS.
New York, March S. —The stock mar
ket was dull most of the day except
the closing, when there was considerable
activity. The interest largely cantered
in the Coalers, whieh made some hand
some advances, and a number of the
Specialties went up over a ixtiut, while
fractional advances wre the rule in
many stocks. The published report of
a combination of practically all the
Coalers was the ground or the strength
in those properties. Much interest at
tached to the declaration of the regular
dividends in Sugar. The market waited
until it was announced, and then mod
erate activity appeared. Sugar, after
opening higher and then losing more
than the earlier gain, rose about four
points for the day. The large payment
which the Government was to make to
Southern Pacific on tlie claim allowed
by Congress lent strength to that prop-

erty. The expectation of favorable leg
islation lifted Consolidated Gas some 5
points, then? being a sympathetic rise
in other local stocks, including Metro
politan amt Brooklyn Transit, which
were up about half as much. Th stag
nant tone which prevailed the greater
part of the session with fluctuations of

final dealings, when the Coalers aver.*
marked up. and there was a sympathetic
rise elsewhere. Lackawanna and Read
