The sales of regulars have been reported small and odd goods have changed hands to the extent of n;i!j about 150,0CX) pieces. Many of these were narrow goods. The price tone, how - ever, has remained very strong in nearly all grades. The settlement of the wage question for the time being at least, lias tended to make the market a more sta ble one in print cloths. In other lines the week has been a large one. Ex port goods have sold well through the week. COTTON. New York. March 11.—The cotton market opened steady with prices one point higher to two points lower, and during the early portion of the session showed a healthy undertone with searce l.\ a single point further dhange in prices. Trading was active with the feature generous liquidation by outsiders, this cotton being absorbed by Liverpool, New Orleans, Philadelphia and local firms. Wall Street sold the May and August deliveries in a small way. The Liver pool cables were about as expected, re ceipts were comparatively light and the weather news was of the best. Southern spot markets held steady with demand fair, and the preparations for the now crop were said to be generally under way. Those factors had been quite gen erally discounted, and in the absence of new influences, the general disposi tion was toward a contraction of ven tures rather than a broadening of inter ests. Late in the forenoon futures took an easier turn under a withdrawal of buy ers. The close was barely steady with quotations net three to six points lower. Estimates receipts at the ports for the day were i-JHio bales, against 1ti.848 bales lust week and 27.154 bales last year. New York, March 11 . Quotations on tin* slock exchange left off fractionally above yesterday’s close and near the highest. Trading at the outset was of a hesitating character, showing u dis position to follow any move in the Spe cialties. This was indicated by a rise in Sugar, the improvement in this stock cancelling the earlier decline. The gen eral market moved sympathetically hut very narrowly. Subsequently there was a raid on Metropolitan Street Railway, which dropped 5 points. This incident stimulated sales on the other stocks with concessions quite material in Manhattan, Brooklyn Rapid Transit, American Sugar and Bay State Gas. The latter was particularly influenced by the ac tion of the Boston exchange authori ties in discounting trading in the stock. This action was subsequently taken by the governors at the local exchange. The railway shares moved very slug gishly. and attempts to improve them were- retarded by thd heaviness of the Union Pacific issues, in which foreign selling was quite pronounced. Various pessimistic expressions as to the prob able character of the bank statement which has been rife during the week, were partly eradicated when the state ment was published. The salient fea ture of it was a contraction in surplus reserve of only $1,375,125. The loan account showed a reduction of over $3,( 1(10,000. (’ash decreased $4,413.<MM1. which reflected sub-treasury operations in connection with the Central Pacific settlement. The mar ket as a whole showed a very substan tial flndcrtone and some striking gain?, were recorded in issues which do not usually assume much prominence in the trading, particularly the AlLsourii Da- Jl>lorlgages.
