HYMNS KEEP SALOONS CLOSED.
Women Sang When the Council Pro
posed to Change the Closing 1 lour
From 10 to 12 p. m.
(Special to The World.)
Chattanooga. Tenn.. April 5.--Chat
tanooga's religious women last night j
prevented the threatened amendment of
the ordinance requiring saloons to close !
at 10 o'clock in a uniqub way. In the ■
crowded Council chamber KM) ladies
sang "Stand Lp for Jesus” and other
hymns.
During a recent revival conducted ny
Rev. Sam Jones the t arly-closing ordi
nance was passed. The saloon el mient
chafed under the restrictions, ami it was
stated that enough votes to make the
closing hour midnight had bet n secur
ed and that the ordinance would be so
amended.
Soon after the meeting opened the la
dies filed into the chamber and soon pre
sented a petition that the ordinance re
main as it is. Then their voices were
raised in hymn singing, making a scene
rare indeed for a council chamber. Not
a word was said by any Councilman
about changing the closing hour and the
ladies went away happy over their vic
tory.

.SUPPRESS A ELM NMD FOOD.
The doctors inform us that alum is a
poison, and that alum baking powders
should bo avoid'd because tney make the
food unwholesome. Prominent hygien
ists. who have given the matter most
study, regard these powders as an evd
that should be suppressed by State ac-l
lion. In Minnesota and Wisconsin
alum povdu's arc not permitted to be)
sold unless they are branded to warn |
consumers of their true character, while
in the District of Columbia the authori
ties have under the dimuioii of Con
gress adopted regulations to prohibit t!i
use of ahuu in bread altogether.
Are not the people of other states, as
well as those of Minnesota and Wiscon
sin. entitled to warning of a danger
which is apparently menacing them at
close hand, and is not the whole country
entitled to absolute protection, as the
people of the District of Columbia arc
protected, by legislation which is en
tirely prohibitive ?
I util we can have protection m the
form of a statute, how can our State
hoards of health. State analyists »r food
commissions better serve tiie public than
by publishing in the newspapers from
time to time the names of the baking
[Kiwders which tiny find to lie made
from ail utu V
Meantime, it will aid the housewife
u designating the alum powders to re
member that all powders sold at 25 cts.
»r less per pound am of this dangerous
•lass. Pure cream of tartar powders
ire usually sold at from 45 to 50 cents
a pound.

THE NEW CUP DEFENDER.
The new cup defender now rapidly
