T.IIUB08S0IJGI1:' SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1849. Steamer Amidas. This beautiful little steamer.entered our waters for the first time on Saturday last, gallantly towing four flat boats, laden with goods, wares, merchandize, . &c. for the merchants of this place. She has been repeatedly here since, and promises to be a fair experiment of navigating Tar river by steam, being well adapted to that pur pose. Success attend her. (PIt is stated in the Raleigh Stand ard that Gen. Thomas J. Person, of North ampton, has resigned hit office as Briga dier General of the Fifth Brigade. Florida. A. E. And if the appointment of Chaplains to each House of Congress is consistent with the Federal Constitution and a republican government Jike ours, they certainly have as much riirht In nnnnint 2 (Iflll plpritrnipn n! n sa a.i r it- - : J ' each to officiate in, and appoint a head bishop for each State and appoint an ,J., . . . , , . Anti-union of Church and Slate. From the Halifax Republican Halifax Superior Court. The Fall Term of Halifax Superior Court was held here last week Judge Battle presided with much case. His charge to. the Jury was clear and able. It is hardly necessary for us, on the present occasion, to say that no Judge who visits this section of the State, stands higher, or is more beloved than Judge Battle. All who know .him love him for his righteous decisions and goodness of heart. Although Court did not adjourn unti Saturday, there was not a great deal of bu siticss on the Docket. Stewart's dry goods establishment, The entire cost of the edifice is estimated at a little within $300,000; and the con templated additions which will extend the range of buildings from Read street to Chambers, will probably cost about $200,- 000 more. These improvements, we learn, arc speedily lo be commenced, their delay having been occasioned by the re cent visit of Mr. Stewart to Paris, whence he has just returned, and where lie has beer, organizing system of agencies adap ted to the extension of his business, which he had previously projected. It is his in tention to open agencies ' also in Lyons. Leipzic and Switzerland. So complete are his arrangements, that when the press of his wholesale trade begins to wane, his retail department is found to demand the largest hare of his attention; his weekly sales averaging from 10 to $50,000. Some idea may be formed of the extent of his operations, from the fact that recently he paid for duties on importations, for one week, 5170,000; and on one occasion, $90,000 in a single day. There are about ISO persons engaged in ihc several departments of this establish ment.
