SupposeJBeecher had'nt belonged to Plymouth Church, would'nt he have been a jarrar at the Centen nial ? Mr. John "7. Garrett, President of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad has just given $15,000 to the Pea- body Art Gallery of Baltimore. Gov. Seymour, of New York, has published a letter reiterating his assurance that he could not accept the nomination for President even in the improbable event of his nomi nation. The Richmond Enquirer says The Centennial Legion, of which a good deal has been said in the pa pers, is to be composed of thirteen, companies of one hundred picked men from the thirteen original States. It will be divided into three battalions Eastern, Middl e and Southern. Pesach X. Cause of his death- ty. -general debili- The Waghington Star says : It is not so certain after all thac Gov ernor Tilden is the choice of the delegates of his own state to the St. Louis nominating convention. The Utica Herald prints a list of the delegates chosen, given it by the best democratic authority in the state, which foots up 37 for Seymour and 33 for Tilden. Mr3. Mary A. Ford, 'Una,' the well-known 7rish-American poetess, is dead. She was heid in very high estimation by the Irish-American and Catholic press of the country. Her 'Washington's Farewell to His Army,' 'A .Hundred Years From Now,' 'The Green and Gold,' the 'Men of Itutli,' and 'God Pity the Poor,' are esteemed araori" the finest things in the English lang uage. Pool did not satisfac torily account to him for a thousand dollars of the Peabody Fund and hence we say he has been guilty of bad faith, reprehensibly so, and can no longer be supported by democrats. They do not conceal short comminr's in any member of the party. Democratic District Convention. The Democratic-Conservative District Convention will convene in Goldsboro on Wednesday 24th inst., anJ it is highly important that every county in the 2nd Con gressional District should be repre sented. A Congressman and Presi dential Electer will then be nomi nated and the selecting of two dele gates to the St. Louis Convention. Let every county send her full quoto of delegates. A Tall Tale Steep of Credulity. A dog in Kentucky having mani fested symptoms of hydrophobia was shot by Jud?e Wickliffe The dogs on the place immediately collected to prepare for a funeral "Old Bull," the largest and fiercest dog, took the body of the dead spaniel in his mouth and started for the woods. The other dogs followed in procession. There the dog-sexton dug a grave at the foot of a tree and deposited the body, and the other dogs joined in covering the remains with earth. The mourners then united in howl ing for fifteen minutes, when . they dispersed. This almost incredible story is substantiated by several persons ef high standing, some of whom are ladies of the family in which the incident occurred. Cheap John to be Deodorized. The Mayor of San Francisco has has issued a proclamation to the Chinamen there in the Chinese language. J.fter promising them fre- dom from riotous attack, he proceeds to tell them why their presence is obnoxious. Many of them belong to the vicious and criminal classes; mas ny of them live by gambling; all of them subject themselves to a species of slavery; nearly all of their women are lewd, their quarters are foul; and they live in disregard of the health regulations of the city. The Mayor elaborates these points in his Chinese proclamation to the San Francisco Chinamen. He warns them that heieafter the laws wil be enforced against their illega' practices, their gambling habits, their lewd women, and their pesti ferous residences. This is the prorer thing to do. There will be no objection to such a policy any where. The law3 and municipa 1 1 i 1 0 1 regulations must De eniorceu ims partially all around, and the China men of San Francisco must be kept m as wholesome and virtuous a con dition as the rest of the papulation. Brief but Brilliant. The two briefest and most bril 1 : i. i i .i i nam orators aoove me 30u are Dom Pedro, His Brazilian Majes ty, and John A. Moore, Esq o 7alifax N. C. When the notables of this sweet scented country met the former in the harbor of New York in bowin. set and polite speeches the old fel low said "all right, all right." No tomfoolery for him. mi . . he latter attended as spectator a base ball match in his town. The conquered side asked our friend to ,i i ii i present tne ball, at tne same time handing it to him. "Who to?" asked he. "To Capt II." "Oh, Certainly," said he. "Cap'n here's your ball." Capt. R. accepted it with a bow stepped back and delivered a flour ishing oratioj. The presenter, amazed, pulled off his hat and lis tened with an intensity that was ravishing. He retired to his room, ordered Rice's manuol, (or some body else's) and at once began a hasty, though thorough study of the art and mys tery of the literature of baseballism. It is more amusisg as our friend is a fine orator and first clas3 law yer. Pardon us, John. The Southern correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial writes : 'I claim some familiarity with Southern politics. I verily believe that in this State, for instance (Tennessee), Bristow would get from 7,000 to 10,000 more white votes than Morton. The old Whigs , and Union men, who are now prin- pn cipally in the Dern ocratic partv. would vote for Bristow in l.irrro numbers. Here is a goldjn op portunity to incorporate white ma terial into tho Republican party in the South, which, above all things, it needs. Bristow can carry iNcrth Carolina, Florida and Alabama, and Morton c&nnet. Bristow can reduce the Democratic majority in this State from 48,000 to 30,000. He has positive strength in the South beyond any man who has been named for the race.' This correspondent is not well nformed. There is no danger that either Bristow or Morton will get the electoral vote of any Southern State except South Carolina. Our Washington Letter. Washington, ,d. a, ? h, 1876. S May 8th CLAPP, TUB PUBLIC PBINTEB. The Clapps, father and son, have been running the Public Printing Establishment here for some years, and have made a good thing of it. They have emerged from poverty and obscurity into affinence ; and now as Mrs. General Gilflory, in the play of " The Mighty Dollar," would say, they move among tho"tong" of Wash ington. JLho marriage ot a aaugn- ter, which was celebrated about six or eight months ago, was the occa sion of more costly pomp and vulgar display than are usual en such oc casions, even among rich parvenus, The "presents" were of extravagant value, and the dressing was simply "stnnning.'' It begar3 all description An investigation into the manage ment of the concern reveals the source of the wealth of the Clapps. Clapp, Sr., was first 'before the Committee, and quibbled and quibbled until an inspection of his books was had, which revealed all that was necessary to prove the Printing Department the most expensive, worst managed altair vat discovered, it remained for Clapp, Jr., ("Harry" they call him to put the clincher on the whole mat ter. When confronted with the enor mous deficit. "Harry" very graceful" ly acknowledged the "soft impeach ment," and said ho didn't know what they, and the old man, could do, ex cept make up the deficiency out of their private pockets. It wa3 very kind in "Harry" to propose to easy a solution of the difficulty, and his read iness to draw his check may some what enlighten the public as to the true amount which has been "extract ed," (stolen is somewhat harsh,) and which the committee has not yet dis covered. A DISGCSTED LOBBYIST. That the present Democratic House of Representatives is less susceptible to the subtle influence of the lobbjists than its piedecessor i3 evinced by the fact that the number of this class ia much smaller than it has been for years. Wrhen the session opened they were here in full force ; but the majority of them have been fright ened off by ,tho scandalous develop ments of the numerous investigations begun and continued under the au spices of the Democratic House. Those who remain, hoping to pick up a few crumbs beforeCongress adjourns, lack the sleek, complacent and self satisfied air of the professional lobby ist, and seem quite despondent over the prospect. A disreputable news paper man, notorious for his connec tion with the Credit Mobiler and Pa cific mail scandals, and various other corrupt sehemes bofore former Con gress, and who has ''feathered his nest" from them, said, the other day, in my hearing : "Damn such a Congress? There's do money in it I've tried, all winter, to get into some little job where I could make a strike ; but it's no use. The men who have jobs are afraid to push them, for fear of an exposure by a House Investigating Committe. Give me a Republican Congress, like the five or six proceeding ones. Damn this parsimonious Democratic House! I can't take a trick." Again, this morning, a well known Washington gambler said to me : "I never before saw the time when so many members of Congress refus ed to eat my dinners, drink my wine, smoke my cigars, and play faro ; but the d d Democratic galoot3 of the present House won't come near my place." Ihe reader will judge whether the statements are derogatory to the moral character of the Democratic ir i c .i . iiiomuura oi ma present Jongres3, or otherwise. ECONOMY OF DEMOCRATIC RULE. The speech at the Annual Dinner of the New York Chamber of Com merce, last week, developed an inter esting and important point in favor of Democratic Administration in gen eral, and Gov. Tilden's in particular, in the fact that, since Tilden has been Governor of New York, (about six teen months) the State tax has been reduced one half ; in round numbers, from $16,0G0,000, in '74, to $8,000, 000, in '76, a saving of 8,000,000, to the tax-payers. Contrast that with Republican rule. Under Grant's ad ministration, the expense of running the Government has about doubled. Could there be any stronger argu ment with the people ia favor of a Democratic President ? REDUCTION AND ANTIxREDUCTION IS SUE JOINED. The other day, ia the House, upon the ca committees for reports, Mr. Singleton, of Mississippi, made a report from the Committee on Ap propriations, non-concurring in the One Hundred and Forty-two amend ments of the Senate on the Diplomat ic, Judiciary and Executive Appro priation Bills. Tho speaker asked if tho committae desired a Committee of Conference, and the reply was a de cided Aro. This brings thincr3 to a foens on the question of reduction in public expeditures. Think of it? One Hundred and Forty-two amend ments racked on the bill by the Sen ate, and every one increasing the esti mates as sent from the House. The Democratic House may rest content. It has done its duty iu the premises ; has endeavored, to the utmost of its ability, to lighten the burdens of Government, which havecomo to bear so oppressly upon the people. If the Republican Senate should force the House Appropriation Committee to a conference and a compromise, tho odium would bo on the Senate ; and every Democratic and Independent newspaper in the land, should see to it that the country is fully informed ia what manner tho patriotic designs of the Democracy have been balked, that each may cast the blamo on the Republican Senate, where it belong s. THE UNIVERSAL DEPRESSION in business still continuos, and no prophet can tell U3 when it will give way to euterpriso and prosperity. Each day records new failures, and some of thorn of factories', which throw large numbers of working ppo- ple out of employment. Farm lands can be had cheaper than at any pe riod since tho groat panic of 1873 ; in fact, whon put up at forced sales in this vicinity, they literally bring nothing. Iy our financial system, the money of tho country has all got into tho hands of non-producers; while thoso who are willing to work lack capital. We are told money is plentiful and interest low ; but there is a want of confidence which kills enterprise, and it will continue until Grant leaves the White llcuse nest March, come what may. In the mean time, tho people will have to subsist on past accumulations, as bears do in winter on their own fat, while Grant revels on 30,000 a year and freo junketings a public exoenso Patience !
