Hall superintendent of the Children's Home at Fargo, came to Sheldon on Monday for the purpose of taking those of the Brown children whom the countv au thorities had arranged to place in the Home. By chance the father of the boys, A. L" Brown, of Casselton, was in town the same day and declared his purpose of caring for his children him self. He seems to be an honest, hard working man and a kind father, who-is anxious to support his family of eight children to the best of his ability, after being deserted by a faithless wife and unnatural mother. He bought the bovs clothes and paid for their board in ad vance. Mr. Hall said he stood ready to ifind homes for the children at any tini^e, but the father is anxious to keep them together if possible. Mr. Brown makes serious charges against the peo ple in whose care he originally left some of the children. tr£fcUSHED BY ENGIN&V Ijlirisboro Banner: Thursday fore noon about 10 o'clock, while John J. Test it, and then offer a n o i n i o n Experience of Bad Lands Boy on the Ranges With President Roosevelt. Bismarck Tribuoe: J. S. Snyder of Sentinel Butte, is one of the men that have had a strenuous exeprience in the Bad Lands of North Dakota, along with President Roosevelt. A Tribune emissary heard him relate in an unos tentatious manner a short time since, a story of his personal experience that is little short of marvellous. At the age of 11 vears he was placed in charge of a band ot 3,500 sheep and sent into the hills forty miles south of Medora for the winter, keeping his sheep at night in a bush corrall, and himself living in a tent, wheTe his daily biiLof fare consisted of bacon and bread, and such wild game as he was able to kill, which at that time was very plentiful. His only companions were his dog and a crippled horse, with an occasional visit from stray bauds of Indians in quest of game. Here he remained from Nov. 10, 1883, until January 20, 1884, without meeting a single white man. 'Hie sheep were turned out to graze— or it might better be said to browse, for most of the grass was buried under two feet of snow—and brought into the corrall at night. And here is where the strenuous experience of this 13-year old boy came in. The winter of 1883-4 was a rigorous one, the snow being too deep to permit of successful grazing, and. in a short time the sheep—which were not acclimated—soon began to grow thin and weak. Those with suf ficient strength were driven into the bush shelter, but as the season advanc ed the number of weak ones grew con stantly larger, and then the youthful shepherd loaded them into an old In dian "jumper" or sled and hauled them in with his old crippled pony. Many times being thus occupied until way on toward midnight. Such an example of unwavering fidelity to the interests of employer is so rarely met with, espec ially by so youthful an employe, as to be worthy of special comment, and while the subject of this sketch receiv ed no reward other than a quite liberal wage for one of his years, he was at that time forming habits of frugality and thrift that in after life were the main springs of a successful business career." For several years "Jack," as he is familiarly callcd, has been engaged in the hotel business, and about a year ago became proprietor of the Hotel Butte at Sentinel Butte, one of the model hostelries of western North Da kota. It is modern in all respects, and Jack and his estimable- wife are ever on the alert in securing the comfort of their guests. 924-25 Per Mon FOB ONI HUNDRED MONTHS Without Interest, buys a home in good oondition, in desirable location.
