At about 5:45 the old four-story building was discovered in flames, and owing to its remote location from the water district the firemen could do but little in checking the fire or staying its spread. A barn, used as a tool house by James Anderson, ad joining the old mill, was also completely destroyed with a quantity of carpenter's tools which were stored therein. The loss is about $1,500. There was no insur ance on either structure. The fire is believed to be of incendiary origin, or was started by tramps who made have been sleeping in the mill. The flour mill was one of the old land marks in Moor head, having been erected in 1882, and has not been operated for a number of •^ears. RESIDENCE DAMAGED. A second alarm was turned in at Moorhead about 8 :jo this morning. An overheated stove at the residence of Henry Zeizas on Second Avenue had ignited the kitchen floor. The depart ment made a good run and succeeded in extinguishing the blaze before any great damage was done. FIRE IN FARGO. The local department answered an alarm turned in from Seventh Avenue North and Broadway yesterday after noon at 4:30 o'clock. A pile of debris in the rear of the vonNieda barn was found in flames. A line of hose was laid and the fire ^vas extinguished before the flames had communicated to the barn. No loss. THIS BEATS SAFE CRACKING. Burglar Hid In Basemsnt and Whan Star* Was Vacated Stole $220. About 6 o'clock last night during- the absence of the proprietor and his clerk, the general merchandise store of Wil liam Staples at Absaraka, was robbed of $220 in cash. The thief made good his escape and so far has not been ap prehended, despite the fact that a posse was in pursuit the greater portion of the night. A clue was obtained today and the officers think they may be suc cessful in running down the guilty par ties. Last night about 5:30 o'clock the clerk employed by Mr. Staples left the store for his supper. At 6 the proprie tor left, locking the store. When the clerk returned he found the safe had been opened and $220 in cash taken. An investigation revealed the fact that the store had been entered through the basement. It is the opinion of the offi cers that the man entered the store some time during the day and unobserv ed entered the basement and awaited the chance to get to the safd when the store attaches were out. The safe was left open, and all the burglar had to do was to pull the door open and take the money. The officers learned this morning that a strange man had begged a ride on a G. N .freight engine, running out of Absaraka, but was put off after rid ing a few miles. The officers are sure that this was the burglar. They have a good description of the fellow, which has been sent to officers all over the state and in western Minnesota. For State News Read The Forum.
