HITCHCOCK IS VERY AN0RV.
Resents Inquiries as to the Removal el For-
y
jner Governor A. H. Burke.
A' Washington dispatch says: do
not Care what the public thinks about
my acts as a member of the cabinet,
and you may understand, also, that it
is a matter of utter indifference to me
what you senators and representatives
in congress think about my official
acts."
This remarkable statement was made
today by Secretary Hitchcock of the
interior department to one of the lead*
ing members of the Minnesota delega
tion in congress. It was in the midst
of a scene which probably never had
a parallel in the history of the rela
tions between the members of the leg
islative branches of the government
and orie of its administrative officers.
This remarkable outburst on the part
of a secretary was made to the Minne
sota member who called to make in
quiry regarding the resignation, en
forced it is alleged, of former Gov. A.
H. Burke of North Dakota from his
place as one of the employes of the in
terior department, charged with the
duty of looking into the affairs of the
public landoffices and making report to
the department.
Governor Burke is not a constituent
of the Minnesota member, although it
is said that Burke's appointment was
indorsed very cordially by Senator Nel
son. This being the fact, and appear
ing only as a friend of Mr. Burke, and
desiring only to ascertain the facts and
to see if any relief could be obtained
for Governor Burke in the matter, the
Minnesota member called and brought
up the subject with Secretary Hitch
cock.
The member, who is not a man to
court notoriety, or to thrust himself
forward in matters that are not of his
concern, was astonished at the out
burst and the sentiments expressed by
the secretary. He discovered that the
secretary resented inquiry into his con
duct of the affairs of the department,
and so irritable and sensitive is the
secretary that he not only resents in
quiry, but does it in a brusque and as
tounding manner, as indicated by the
statement, in effect, that he does not
care for public or legislative opinion
regarding his official acts.

V1 #U1T FOR DAMAGTS,
Minot Optic: A civil suit against
Hon. P. P. Lee by.Jim Morrison is
now in progress at the courthouse. The
history of what bids fair to be a cele
brated case was given in The Optic at
the time of the accident. Morrison
contends that he went to Mr. Lee's
store last April and called for a can
of kerosene. Mr. Morrison took the
liquid home and the result claimed is
that the stove blew up and^that Mr.
Morrison narrowly escaped being Cre
mated.
He was burned so badly that the
flesh sluffed from his hands and arms.
The case will be heard by a jury and
the outcome watched with an unusual
degree of interest.

I MAY RECOVER.
Jamestown Alert: Dr. Baldwin re
turned late Friday afternoon from Jim
Lake, where he was called to look aft
er the Plinsky boy, who was accident
ally shot. The boy was following his
uncle, who carried a loaded shotgun,
the muzzle pointing toward the boy.
The trigger caught on a piece of brush
and the result was the discharge of the
gun and the wounding of the boy. An
ugly wound was made in one knee and
some of the shot lodged in the foot of
the boy's other leg. He lost a great
deal of blood b'efore the flow was stop
ped but will recover, the doctor be
lieves. The lad is 11 years old. His
uncle is feeling very badly over the ac
cident.
SERIOUS DAMAGE.
Late Saturday afternoon John Han
son, a farmer living near Argusville,
was driving on Front Street and when
he had occasion to stop he tied his
team, a heavy one attached to a wa
gon, to the barber sign and pole, in
front of Brown's barber shop, oppo
site the N. P. passenger depot grounds.
All went well until the snorting engine
of the arriving west bound N. C. Lim
ited hove in sight. That frightened the
animals and in plunging to get away
pulled down the pole and sign and
dashed across the street, the pole dang
ling at, their feet. In the street they
collided with J. D. Moulder who was
driving in a carriage with his wife and
son. All were violently tnrown to the
ground ,and the carriage was wrecked
beyond all possible repair. Mrs.
Moulder fainted and' a physician was
called, but after Careful nomination
it was found that not one-of the party
had sustained any serious injury, but
those who witnessed the smashup won
der that they were not killed or sub
jected to permanent injuries.
At the request of a police officer the
farmer r^mbursed Mr. Brown for the

AMUSEMENTS,
West's Minstrels will be at the Fargo

next Wednesday evening. Besides the
regular first part of songs and jokes
the company will present an elaborate

This is making one of the biggest hits
of anything of the kind ever introduced
into minstrelsy. The company is large
and includes a number of black-face
comedians and sweet singers.
WANT DIVORCES.
Jarflestown Alert: Mrs. Atlie M.
Miller has commenced suit in district
court for a divorce from Joe Miller.
She alleges non-support and desertion.
Miller left the city over a year ago.
He is a worthless character and had a
great deal of trouble with the authori
ties before he left. Three years ago
he stabbed Adam Brucker in a drunk
en scrap in a billiard hall. He made a
sensational escape on horseback to
South Dakota, where he was located
and placed under arrest. In court he
displayed a great deal of bogus affec
tion for his wife and family and this,
coupled with the fact that the man
stabbed did not want to send him to
the penitentiary, resulted in the jury
disagreeing. The case went over one
term and was dismissed. Later Miller
deserted the wife who l\ad stood by
hna in time of trouble.

Nov. 28.—Thomas' Orchestra.
The incidental music for William
Owen's new romantic play, "When
Louis XI Was King," in which he will
be seen at the Fargo operahouse this
evening is both novel and effective It
is composed largely of old Scotch,
Gaellic and French airs arranged to fit
the requirements of the play, by Arthur
McGregor, a noted composer and di
rector of St. John, N. B., who is prob
ably the best authority in the world of
this style of music. It adds a Scottish
atmosphere to the performance that is
redolent of the heather and thistle.
While the scenes of the play are all
laid in France and Burgundy the star
part and several others are Scottish
lads in kilts and tartans, attached' to
the court of Louis XI.
