Bismarck .Tribune The 'annual slaughter of, deer and deer hunters i3 in full blast. On the late train from Washburn Saturday night was brought down the remains of Henry Clark, a farmer living .near Lidgerwood, who was shot and killed last week near Coal Harbor. Clark was out hunting deer with George Eskes. They had wound ed a buck and Clark was sent to a designated place to watch for the ani mal. He went, itno the patch of brush where the animal was. and seeing the motion of the brush and not knowing Clark was there his companion shot and the bullet passed through his body above the hips. He lingered until Thursday when he died. His brother from tliis city brought the body down Saturday, on the late train, arriving here at 10 o'clock, and it was taken to Lidgerwcod. The brother is a resi dent of this city, being employed by the Soo road as watchman at the Soo cros sing- Teddy Newman of this city while hunting at Painted Woods, met with a narrow escape. He was passing through the brush and extended his arm ahead of him to separate the. brush. Immediately some waiting hunter fired and the bullet passed through his arm above the Wrist. He was brought to the city where Dr. Smyth attended him. His arm was quite badly injured the radius being shattered by the bullet. Had he atcmptcd to forcc his body through the thicket instead of extend ing his arm, he would doubtless have received the bullet through the body. A report comes from Mandan that a man named Wade was accidentally shot and fatally wounded near old Fort Lin coln, six miles below there, while hunt ing deer. 9,^1 N 3 FORCED TO'RETURN® Ashley Republican: ,Christian Fisch cr informs us of the arrival last week of Jakob Klipfel, his brother-in-law. from southern Russia. The case against Keenan is supposed to be entirely circumstantial, but the state has some important testimony that will be brought out at the prelim inary hearing. FIRE.MAKES FARGO BQOM. Owotonna Journal: The burning of the Fargo courthouse is a sad loss to one of the most wide-awake and pro gressive cities of the northwest. But while a heavy loss it will not prove a set-back. Fargo is not made of the kind of stuff that takes a set-bask. A big fire seems to put additional energy into her effort to surge ahead. i RETURN WHO TOWNE, CHARLES CONGRESS. It seems to have, been decided that when George B. MeClellan retires from congress to assume the mayoralty of New York city Charles A. Towne will be nominated by the Democrats to succeed liim. Mr. Towne is one of the most unique political personages in the United States, for the reason that he lias run almost the entire party gamut. In 1894 Mr. Towne, then a struggling lawyer in Dulutli. Minn., was nominated for congress by the Republicans. He soon attracted national attention by n speech in the house in favor of the unlimited coinage of silver. With Senator Teller and other Republics leaders he bolted the national convention of his party in 1890 and supported Bryan. In 1900 Mr. Towne was nominated on the Populist and free silver tickets for the vice presidency, but withdrew in favor of Adlai E. Stevenson, whom the Democrats had nominated. During the same year Mr. Towne served two months as a member of the United States senate- by appointment of Governor Ladd of Minnesota- He then removed to New. York city. TWAS A COLD, COLD NIGHT.
