I J- v o i i 'v-'' II: i^uftif'1- "AN EMPTY STOCKING." 1A Pathetic Picture in the Holiday Inland Printer That Would Melt Heart of Stone. Its Influence on a Dyspeptic Father Whose Purse Strings Had Strang led Sentiment. *Sp i "An empty stocking." There is a tragedy in the fulfil sig nificance of those words. A tragedy in baby life, which should touch a heart of stone. But there is an artist who makes pic tures for The Inland Printer, who has the faculty of melting hearts of stone and as a result of one ef his drawings, which appeared in the holiday number of thislartistic trade journal, there will be fewer empty stockings than there otherwise would have been. The effect of this picture wis tailed to the notice of The Forum by an in cident last night in the store of the North Dakota Book & Stationery Co. He was thin, dyspeptic and cross drained, and he scowled at the little tot who was at his elbow prattling of Santa Claus. He was looking at the magazines on a table and at last his eyes were riveted on a picture. Then his features relaxed a little and he put on his glasses. Several people standing near followed his gaze and saw a picture. It was entitled: "The Empty Stocking." Not a line of explanation was on it. Its carefully drawn lines, almost ani mated, told this story: A bleak, bare attic room—great holes in the plaster. A cheap bed with scanty covering. A plain wooden chair with a little girl's dress on it. The walls—innocent of ornament—only a calendar and one little stocking hang ing from it to relieve its poverty stricken appearance. A window—one of those old affairs with small panes of glass—is above the bed. The dawn is stealing through the dust-stained glass, and falls on—a child. But, oh, the pathos of the little one! Half kneeling, half lying on the bed in her little nightgown, with her head buried in her arms, and one bare foot on the floor, one tiny hand clasps—an empty stocking! ,. That's all. ,r There's nothing picture to tell you, but you know it is Christmas morning and that another little heart has been broken. You can see, almost, the child's simple delight, the night be fore, as calm in her absolute faith in Santa Claus she hangs her tiny stock ing up. You can see her tossing, rest less on her bed, half crazed with anti cipation. but trying so hard to sleep, for Santa never comes while little folks are awake. You can see the touch of the slumber god closing the bright eyes, see the tossing arms grow still and the excited features relax, as dark ness and night steal over the city. Then the scene changes. The dawn conies. The child awakens with a start, shrieks with delight as she real izes it is Christmas morning. She bounds from the bed, with arms out stretched and a glad cry on her lips. She rushes to—the empty stocking. Then you see the heart-broken, sob bing baby, clutching the little garment, turn slowly, stagger a step, then fall on the bed in a paroxysm of grief. That's the story the picture told this thin, dyspeptic and cross-grained man with the little one prattling of Santa Claus at his side, as he saw it in The Inland Printer. And that's why the dyspeptic wiped his glasses. "Poor lit tle girl," he muttered. "I wish I might have filled that empty stocking. My little^ Bessie shall not suffer the same fate." His purse strings were untied and there will be a bright and joyous Christmas in that home and the tragedy of "the empty stocking,' so uniquely written in the picture, will not be re enacted at least in one home. What a pity there is not a large re production of that picture in every block, in every city in the world! $2 MORE THAN HALF FARE From St. Paul via Chicago Great West ern Railway to points in Arkansas, Colorado Kansas.
