LOOP IS WELL NAMED" Dlavalo, Dean of All Dare-Devils, De liberately Defies Destruction and Dauntlessly Dallies With Disaster Twice Dally at the Carnival. Immediately following the grand fi nale in the Hippodrome, at the Carnival, Announcer George C. Johnson steps im pressively toward the enormous loop structure, erected in the open esplanade, within easy view of all carnival visitors, and introduces the cap sheaf act of all dauntless and dare devil tantalization ol d&nger, disaster and death. Announcer Johnson invariably suc ceeds in working his listeners up to a nervous pitch before he introduces to the people Diavolo, the greatest acro bat. the most agile athlete .and the high est salaried performer in the world tor. i: ARTHUR C. HOLDEN (DIAVOLO^jh The man who risks his life twice every day for the double purpose of entertaining the public and earning the fabulous salary which the act of suc cessfully looping the death-trap loop, commands* -i V r\tli day—Diavolo, thd man tohb twice daily" shakes dice with d^ath and skirts the bbrderland of eternity—the man who loops the death-trap loop. The thrilling talk of Announcer Johnson leaves the already wroughtup nerves of the spectators at a bursting point pressure and while the wild throbbing of hearts is permitted to re cuperate- preparatory to the magnificent looping of the loop by Diavolo, tonight the grandest display of fireworks in fancy and costliest of set pieces ever shown in this city will be commenced. Just prior to the last grand burst of fiery stars, emerald green and crimson fire, and midst a perfect rain of vari colored sparks from the heavens, Dia volo, king of dare-devils, the Captain Courageous of all performers, will start down the mighty ioo-foot runway, steep as the sides of a precipice and seeming ly as narrow as a ribbon, like an arrow into the death-dealing loop standing there to receive him like some monster dragon of other days, with hideous jaws extended and life-exterminating mouth held wide as,to welcome the daring rid er.- :4 v:')7 For a second'$oti iw&teb. Diavwo fit his flight. He moves- with the rapidity of light ning itself. f, 'vf A The whftW^&f his tiefdi as iye rushes downward exerts over the hyp notized onlookers a drowsiness as though their senses were about to reel and cause them to fall. In far less time than it takes to tell it, Diavolo passes the bottom of his de scent and enters the loop. Up the ini tial side wall he rushes like a flash now he is perfectly up-side down it is the precise point from where men be fore Diavolo have fallen to their death where men equally daring but less skill ed than Diavolo have been precipitated like lead to the bottom of the structure with broken legs, arms and fractured skulls. If he can pass this particular point, where the irresistable laws of gravita tion clash with the irrefutable princi ples of centrifugal force in' a magnifi cent battle-royal, he has conquered the greatest danger. Diavolo appears to stop for the frac tion of a second when the ton of pres sure which bore him into the loop has ebbed to a point but little more than zero at the top. In reality it is only a trick that the human mind is .playing its individual possessors, for Diavolo. passes on with almost the speed with which he entered the loop, and, moving^ at the rate q£ fur. strikes the down-grade exit of the and, like a bullet shot from a is otit and, safe. ey call it "a great act."
