Tbo Sale of the Manuscript C097 *f "The Vicar of Wakefield." litter Incapacity for managing his own money affairs had brought poor Goldsmith, not for the first time, to his last penny, and the cork the Tit-Bits. his landlady to the end of her stock of patience. It was in these circumstances that "The Vicar of Wakefield" was sold to pay the un happy author's unpaid rent. Boswell tells us that one morning in 1764 Dr. Johnson received an urgent message from Goldsmith begging he would come to him as soon as possible, ns he was In great distress. Johnson at once ient him a guinea and then went over to see his friend. He found Goldsmith much excited and in a violent passion because his landlady had arrested him for his rent. "I perceived," says the doctor, "that he had THE'GULF OF MEXICO. It Is Surrounded by the Richest Re gion of the World. The gulf of Mexico Is a sea 1,000 miles long from the strait of Florida to the harbor of Tampico aud 800 miles wide from the mouth of the Mississippi river to the mouth of the Goatzacoalcos. This Mediterranean of the west is surrounded by countries of extraordi nary richness in the fertility of their soil, the geniality of their climates, the vastness and value of their forests, the variety and extent of their mineral en dowments. All these countries, capable of sus taining hundreds of millions of people, are Inhabited by nations and races who live under republican forms of govern ment and cherish and maintain free in stitutions. The northern coast line of this important sea Is in the great re public of the United States of North America, the southern half is in the next greatest American republic, that of Mexico, while on the east are the important islands of the West Indies, with Cuba at their head. The region around this most Important sea is des tined to be far richer, more powerful, and more distinguished in the history and affairs of our globe than were ever those that bordered the ancient Med iterranean of the eastern hemisphere, not even excepting Egypt, Greece and Rome.—New Orleans Picayuao. Prisoners of War. "Treatment accorded to prisoners of war in the early part of the nineteenth century would not be endured for a moment in the twentieth century," says an English writer. "To say that we starved our captives is untrue that we stinted them of necessaries is a fact French prisoners wert? kept in durance on board hulks at Portsmouth and Bishops Waltham. Cases are on rec ord of the dogs of British officers pay ing a call on board being decoyed be low, where they were killed and con verted into cutlets, while the masters were chatting on the. deck. Rats in the hold were fished for with hooks baited with ration beef and, when caught and cooked, were eagerly de voured. The French prisoners to kill monotony gambled. The counters were rations. One man at Portchester lost his rations for eight days running and died of starvation." Gtiaacow's Cable Rout, A massive rope is used daily In pull ing all the London trains out of Glas gow from Queen street high level sta tion over the Cowlalre gradient the first mile and a half of which Is so steep as to exceed the power of the locomotive. This rope, which is made of steel wire and is three miles long, coRts £600 and lasts from ten to twelve months. It is endless and lies on the surface of the up and down tracks supported on iron pulleys, dipping un derground at either end. At Glasgow each train is fastened on to It by a chain arrangement, and the rope, being set In motion by the stationary engine at Cowlaire, pulls the train to the sum mit, from which point it continues the Journey unassisted.—London Grap&G. (Chicago News: Esperanto has a ri val. Glan-lk came to Chicago today from New York. The man who got it up doesp't reveal in the paper-bound book that is being sent out to boom the new language, who he is. He tells, however, many things about Klan-ik, which is "slen" for Anglo-American. "Slen" is the condensed way of saying "selective abblutination." The prin ciple of the language is "the taking of sounds from along a word^or sentence and making a new word of them." It Is declared that the demand of the age is a trade language adapted to univer sal use. "vurp" is Glan-lk for "every person." "Fraa" for "for as much as," "nort" for "in order that" and "prldz" for "provided always." "Zara" is Glan-lk for examination. College youths have been pretty close to that for some time. It's always "exam" with them. The bold person who has thrust Glan-lk on the unsuspecting and un prepared public will have his own trou bles when the writers get after him. He or she—maybe it—declares in the deep veil of anonymousness that Glan ik contains no sounds except such as are heard in our mother tongue. An illustration is given: "We call 'immediate' 'meej.' The critic in the newspapers will take up 'meej' and he will write funny and witty paragraphs about it. He will roll It around and push it over and lift it up and then welcome It as a strange sound never heard before and will ask where it comes from and how long it intends to stay.
