Smith of Carringtim was elect ed president of the North Dakota Re tail Hardware Merchants' association at the close of its sixteenth annual convention in this city yesterday. C. N. Barnes of Grand Forks, in his re election to the secretaryship, was honored by the association for the seventeenth consecutive time as he has held this office since the date of organization in' Fargo sixteen years ago. The officers elected for the en suing year were: President—A. jr. Smith, Carrington. First Vice President—C. V. Fergu son, Glenburn. Second Vice President-—Otto Soug stad, Northwood. Secretary—C. if Barnes, Grand Forks. Treasurer—W. R. Mcintosh, Botti neau. Executive committee member—J, H. i Met Nullum, Hope. Delegates to national convention at Detroit—E. R. Jacobson, Minot, and Otto Sougstad, Northwood. The choice of a place of meeting for 1913, was left witi the executf committee and will probably not s. made public until next summer so: n time. The conven tion was considered the most success ful ever held in the history of the association and full credit for its suc cess was given Hubert Harrington and H. F. Th0 Seventeenth annual oratorial contest was held in the agricultural college armory last evening and prov ed to be an Interesting event. Arthur Ogaard won out over five other con testants, all of whom had some of the best orations ever heard here. His subject was, The Real Peril, and it was delivered in a very pleasing man ner, his thought and composition be ing especially good. Miss Ella Heidner was a close sec ond with an oration entitled Am I My Brother's Keeper? She brought out some very line points and was right fully entitled to second honors. Dean Mendenhall gave his oration. Progress of Democracy, in a clear and concise manner and had better command of himself on the stage than some of the others. His delivery was very good. The contest was very close through out and no one person had a decided advantage over the other. The other three contestants were Clarence Wal ter, Bertha Camp ahd Rosabell Magill with the following orations, The Need of a Rural Awakening, The Crucible of America, and the last with, Inter national Peace. V iii i. I, The report of the North DaJ*ot i demonstration farms for 1910 is from the press. A separate report is made -of each of the twenty-four farms. The summer of 1910 was exceedingly dry. making it a good tester of methods. The value of corn as a preparation for the growing of wheat is most emphatically made. At Hoople the wheat after wheat went eight bushels per acre. The plot next to it that had been cropped the same except that it was in corn the year before went nineteen bushels. At Rugby the wheat after corn went ten bushels per acre while wheat after grain went but two and one-half. At harvest time 1910 the moisture to a depth of three feet in the corn field was 16 per cent in the wheat field, 11% per cent in the oat field. 8% barley field, 13% peas and oats field, 9%, and in the flax field, lo%. In 1909, a wet season, the moisture at harvest time was 17% per cent in the corn field to a depth of three feet. In the wheat field it was 13% oat field. 12% barley, 17% oats and peas, 14% flax, 16%. In 1908 the corre sponding figures were, corn, 18 wheat, 13% oats, 14% barley, 15 peas and oats, 11, and flax 10%. The report contains 166 pages and is illustrated.
