Frank Fisher and Chas. Peel are in
Jail charged with assault with a dead
ly weapon, as the result of a quarrel
last night, in which Olvie Maurrish
was quite severely stabbed in the
side and Zauner Hussa. received
severe cuts in the face.
Maurrish and Hussa who are em
ployes of the Milwaukee road, were
asleep in a small shack on the pro
perty of the railroad, when Fisher and
Peel, who quit work with the Mil
waukee a short time ago, knocked at
the door and demanded admittance.
Maurrish got up and went to the
door, and Fisher told him that he and
Peel were going to sleep there. Maur
rish started past him, to consult with
the section foreman about the matter,
when Fisher is said to have stabbed
him in the side.
Maurrish ran and then Hussa came
to the door, and was badly cut about
the face. He also escaped, and the
two ran for some distance, chased by
Fisher and Peel. The fugitives ran
toward the section house, and told
Hoglund of the affair. The police
were notified, and found Fisher and
Peel in the shack. Both of the injured
men will probably recover, though
Maurrish's wound in the side is very
deep.

Mr. Spears is the champion fancy
shot billiardist of the world. After a
regular game or 18-inch balkline he
will give an exhibition of the great
est fancy and trick shots ever wit
nessed in Fargo.

JEWISH HOLIDAY FEAST OF
TABERNACLE OBSERVED IN
THIS CITY LAST EVENING-
HEBREWS THROUGHOUT THE
WORLD CELEBRATED OCCASION
The Jewish festival of Siiccoth or
I the Feast of the Tabernacles began at
sunset last evening, and Hebrews in
Fargo and throughout the world en
gaged in a general observance of the
holiday, which is a continuation of the
harvest festival of ancient Palestine.
I Orthodox followers of the faith in
Moses mark the day. by reciting pray-j
I ers and eating their meals in booths
erected on roofs of tenements or in
back yards.
These temporary structures are
decorated with fruits, flowers, twigs
and garlands of leaves, symbolic of
the harvest season, while the interior
walls of the booth bear family and
I religious pictures.
Suceoth falls on the 15th of the
month Tishri, corresponding this year
with Oct. 15 and 16 in the Gregorian
calendar. It was on this date that the
farmers of the old Jewish nation
gathered to celebrate the conclusion
of the toilsome task of harvesting.
The character of the feast is essen
tially agricultural but as the vast
majority of Jews are now gathered in
cities and towns, the holiday has
gradually gained a nationalistic
significance.
The booths now commemorate the
tents or huts in which the Israelites
dwelt during their forty years of
wandering in the wilderness but in
the decorations of the booths the com
mercial and industrial Jews of today
pay a tribute to their agricultural an
cestors.
The Jews now maintain a national
farm school in Pennsylvania, and a
pilgrimage is made, to this institution
every year on Succoth by prominent
Jews.
In New York, Chicago and other
American cities, a movement has been
started to turn the poorer Jews of the
Ghetto into farmers, and has already
met with some success. Plans are
under consideration to establish agri
cultural colonies of Hebrews in vari
ous sections, as well as in Palestine.

Sheriff Tim Dwire of Lisbon arriv
ed in Fargo last night and left this
morning for Bismarck with Fred
Wassen, who was sentenced by the
Ransom county court to two years in
the penitentiary for the robbing of
boxcars.
Wassen is one of four who have
been caught, and the officials believe
that the capture of the four has brok
en up one of the worst gangs of
thieves that the state has ever known.
They have been systematically rob
bing boxcars on the Soo road be
tween Hankinson and Enderlin for
some time past.
The other t? ree who were caught
were picked up at Hankir.son and
Enderlin oy the county officers, and
by special officers of the railroad,
company. They will be arraigned at
Lisbon today.
