The Bismarck Tribune is the oldest oewB^aper in the state—established June It, 187& It has a wide circulation and Is desirable advertising medium. Being published at the capital of the stute It makes a feature of state news, of a semi official character, and Is therefore particu larly Interesting to all who desire to keep the run of state affairs—political, social and business. The Grand Forks Herald is 20 years of age. It was established Nov. 1, 1881, and has been operatic for twenty years under the same management. The Herald admits that it has, in com mon with all papers In the Tytesit, had its financial ups and downs, but it has shared in the. prosq»erity of the past few years and is notw well established, prosperous and thoroughly equipped. The Herald has one of the largest circles at readers in the state. As a newspaper, it stands at the head of papers in the state, and while the Tri bune has enjoyed frequent differences of opinion with the Herald, it extends the best wishes for a continuance of prosperity in the next generation. The annual report of Camml^ioiie? Herman of the general land office says 15,562,769 acres of public land were disposed off during the test fiscal year, an increase of 2,108,908 over the pre vious year which was the banner year in public land sales. The net surplus from the inteiior land and forest ad ministration is $3,458,442. This Grand Forks Herald says beer shipments from East Grand Forks to points in North Dakota hove doubled, and suggests it is due to the fact that the Bitatbe enforcement league Is not so busy as it was a year ago. aft* chafthev 'tailor* aide. Way up in the northern part of the state, in Pembina county, apples are successfully grown. The Pink Paper reports others in that county who have made a success of fruit grow ing in a small way. CANT GET MEN. The Bismarck, Washburn & Great Falls company find it impossible to get the men they need for •work in the coal mines at Wiliton. The demand for the coal is heavy as the winter is coming OIL, and the company needs 100 men alt onoe. There is gpod pay, steady work, good board and room in prospebt for all who come. The road, is advertising in all parts of the state for men. The mines have been equipped with new and modern ma chinery for the mining of coal. There are new cutters, fans, screens and other devices found in a first class coal mine They have also installed a new link hoist, guaranteed to raise i25 tons of coal an hour from the mine'leveL This gives the. mine a large capacity, and will enable it to fill all orders. HOT STUFF FROM MEDOEA, A Miedora dispatch says: Jaick Snyder has sold the Metropolitan hotel and skloon to J. RozeU of Sentinel Butte. This is the saloon in wbich Gunny sack Bill wrote the initials of his name, in the wall balck of the bar, with pistol balls, while Tom Grozier was kept busy dodging. Grozier finally slipped out the back door to hunt the sheriff, and when he returned Gunnysack had full charge of thie saloon and all drinks were free for awhile. When asked why he fired his gun he replied that at the time he imagined he was Dewey in Manila Bay, and that Grozier was a Spaniard. Overcoats. Ferrier of Manila, former ly veterinary in the government service from Jamestown, is getting to the front in a business way. He has recently been appointed receiver of a bankrupt railway company and the Manila pa pers speak of his good business quali fications and give him a greait send off. He has a large.transportation business employing a hundred men and i3 said to be making moitey faster than most young men of his age.
