H. Garnett of St. Thomas, a mem ber of the pardon board, who is spend ing the week in the city. /Mr. Garnett has known Mrs. Mc Clung since she came with her broth er to Manitoba, Canada, in the early frontier days. In speaking of Mrs. Mc Clung to a Tribune representative this looming, iMr. Garnett said: "She is without doubt the greatest woman lec turer of the day and her work in the province of1 .Manitoba, or 'the prairie province/ as Mrs. McClung terms it, has been phenomenal." iMr. Garnett said she first gained recognition when she became inter ested in the political conditions of Manitoba. Her appeal for better gov ernment for women was so strong, he said, that IMr. Roblin, then premier, met her in open debate and so strong wins her argument that she was never jhyited again to meet him. Keeping a disrespectable place is the ground for the ouster proceedings instituted by Pat-Casey this morning in an attempt to break the Lease held on his building, the Atlantic cafe, 'by Charles Tuck, a Chinaman. The case is being tried before Judge J. O. Var ney in the district court chambers. About a-half dozen Orientals mixed with the whites in atendance. Casey took the stand this afternoon and, under the fire of Attorney Geo. M. iUegister, made some statements that one would infer Tuck's^-place was one of "the lights of Clhinatown." He testified of the proprietor, being drunk and of girls frequenting the place. Deputy. Sheriff Welch said he had visited Jap place to serve subjoenas, but he could not swear that it was a disrespectable place. SUNDAYS AT HOME. Frank H. He intimated this afternoon that the raise in pay probably is confined to the factory men of the Harvester company in the east. BISMABCK WOMAN ASKS PASSPORT TO IRELAND Mrs. Ellen J. Falconer, wife of J. iR. Falconer of. near the city has made application through Clerk of Court Charles Fisher to the department of state for a passport to Ireland. !Mrs. Falconer expects to sail December 30, on the Philadelphia, from New York City, for an extended visit with her niQther.
