The heavy artillery handles all guns above six-inch calibre, all large how itzers, large trench mortars, and the anti-aircraft guns assigned to corps and armies. If it is true that ihe in-, fantry is "The Queen of Battles," then it is equally true that the heavy artillery has won in the course of this war, the fight to wear the crown as "King of Battles." All officers for the heavy artillerv are commissioned after passing thru the coast artillery training school. The school for tlio eastern part of the country is located at Fort. Mon roe, Virginia. The candidates for this school are selected from enlisted men already in the artny, from stu dent soldiers in the students' army training corps, and from civil life. Civilians who -desire to work for a commission must, as a preliminary measure, be voluntarily inducted in to th ^military service. Any man subject to draft, no mat ter what his age or classification can apply for voluntary induction with the object of trying for a commission in the heavy artillery. Men in class one who are so inducted and fail to make good for a commission, are retainejd in the military service as enlisted men. Men of deferred classifications on ac count of dependent relatives, who fail to obtain a commission are returned to civil life. Then the candidate is sent to Fort Monroe and put into a j'reser voir" company to await the nex course at the school. Ten days is the aver ave time that the candidate is in the "reservoir" company. While both at the cost defense and in tfie "reser voir" company the candidate is coach ed on mathematics, to better his chances at the school. Men who are graduates from engi neering schools nearly always make good as heavy artillery officer's. How ever. many lawyers, business men, iand others.! have made excellent rec ords. 'v Washburn, N- D., Oct. 21.—A tele gram -received here yesterday an nounced the death of Colonel' A. W. Hall, well known in Bismarck, at a Texas camp, from Sptnish influenza. He was stationed at Fort Lincoln for a while about twelve years ago. It was while there he was married in Lismarck to Miss Daisy DeGaff, the. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W H. De Gaff, now of Washburn. Colonel Hall had received a series of rapid promotions within the past three months, when he returned from the Philippines where he had been sta tioned for two years. He carried the title of captain when he returned to this country. Fj-om that he was promoted to major and again to lieu tonant. it was within the past month he was made a colojiel. For a time he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., but three weeks ago he was transferred to a Texas camp. He expected Bhortly to leave for France. Colonel Hall was stricken quite sud denly. He was thirty-seven years of age and beside his widow, he is sur vived by a boy, six years of age. The remains will b6 shipped for interment to Colonel Hall's old home at Indian apolis, Ind. ———10 W.
