OUT OUR WAY—By Williams
“Home, Sweet Home,” which was
placed in the second act of the opera,
was popular from the start. It spread
rapidly throughout the English-speak
ing world, bringing tears to the eyes
of countless thousands.
Payne used to tell his friends that

he caught the air from a little g
during a trip through Italy.
The words of the song, Payne said,
came to him while he was a student
at Union College in Schenectady,

days on the Long Island farm.
