JONATHAN APPLES ON UMRKET Pride of Washington Orchards ' Best for Eating at This Fall Season The first real commercial apples of the present season—Jonathans from the state of Washington—have begun to arrive on the local market and are being displayed in stores and on fruit stands. The Jonathan apple has long been known as one of the finest of fall ap ples and, in the famous orchard dis tricts of Washington, they attain a remarkable perfection. For in these modern orchards, ap ples do not simply grow—they are grown. All through the year the or chards receive regular attention. The trees' are carefully 'pruned and sprayed against the attacks of insects or pests. The orchard land is syste matically tilled and fertilized. When the fruit has set and at tained a certain age in the early sum mer. it is thinned by removing the apples that touch upon others or that would prevent the tree bearing the Kg sameHH PRICE Dm forover 4o years Cook’s Grocery The M Big” Little Store Phone 564 512 Avenue D Everything in Fruits and Vegetables Squash - - Carrots > Specials Florida Grape- Q Concord Grapes, QQ fruit, 3 for auOC for jelly, per bask. The apple* are picked by hand, the pickers depositing them gently in bags suspended from their shoulders, so that the fruit may not be bruised. The apples are then transferred carefully to boxes and conveyed to the packing plant where they are cleaned to remove the or chard dust, sorted and sized, indi vidually wrapped in tissue paper and expertly packed in standard boxes Each box bears the number of ap ples it contains and their grade and variety, stamped plainly on the end. These selected apples are not only shipped to all parts of the United States but go in refrigerated snips to every civilized country. Reports from the orchard districts state that the crop of Jonathon ap ples grown in Washington this year is one of the finest ever produced there, both as to the quality of the fruit and as to color. The Jonathan is a fall apple and. while modern storage methods enable these apples to be kept for several months, they, are at their best when eaten in Sep tember or October. |P(Rp|n Open the new Em press deep-cream and • royal - purple vacuum can—catch that aroma of de licious freshness!
