Local Boy’s Radio
Attracts Attention
A crystal radio receiving set,
built at a cost of only 98 cents by
a 17-year-old Bismarck boy but
powerful enough to pick up pro
grams broadcast from Los Ange
les, has attracted attention in
various parts of the United
States.
The builder is Howard Byrne,
son of Secretary of State and
Mrs. Robert Byrne.
Some time ago, young Byrne
submitted a sketch of the radio
built to the “Radio News,” which
published the diagram. Byrne’s
set is noteworthy because of its
ability to pick up programs from
a great distance.
A series of letters he received
from many parts of the country
in regard to the set was climaxed
a few days ago with a communi
cation from L. M. Church, of the
war department, Washington.
Church’s letter follows: “I am
very much interested in your
latest hook-up using crystal.
What would you charge me to
build one of these sets on base
board and panel? I no doubt
could construct such a set but it
would not be as good as one built
by the designer. If it will hot
cost over four dollars, go ahead
and build it and let me know and
I will forward you a money order
immediately upon hearing from
you.”
