Here are some tlmoly anccilote-s ot Uncle D.m Kmmutt. the man who wrote "DIxlo Land" and many famous darky aoriffs. Itecontly asked how ho came to write his famous song, bo replied after paislng bis hnnd rcmlnUceotly over bis wrinkled brow: "It was In the fall of ISoO, when I was with Bryant's minstrels, who ran a successful business at 472 Broad way. New York. Sty particular en gagement wan to write comic negro and other dialect songs and 'walk rounds' when called upon and to act as musician or minstrel when occasion ruqulred. One Saturday evening after the performance was over and the players gone I was walking homeward when I beard footsteps bt'hlod me. Turning around. I came face to face with Jerry Bryant, the manager, who had overtaken mo for some purpose or other. " 'Dan,' he said, 'I want a new "walk round" a new one, one that the boys and the gang will learn quickly and sing In tho streets Immediately. Mako mo a soug that will bo popular, one that the hands will play and tho peo ple will whistle and sing.' " This Is pretty short noUce to make what you want,' I replied, 'but I'll do my best.' The next day was Sunday, and the rain flooded the streets, keep ing me In the house. 'Well,' said my wife. 'It's too wet to go anywhere. Why don't you get out your pen. Ink and paper and compose that "walk round" you promised Jerry nnd have It ready for rehearsal tomorrow?' "It was a Job I did not relish, but I collected my thoughts and began. A tune wus buzzing In my head, and I put it down on the lines and spaces. That's nil." "Mow long did this take you?" he was naked. "Ten minutes." "Ten minutes?" "Yes, but It took mo longer to mako the words. The whole thing. Including plantation verses and music, was fin ished nnd copied In an hour or less. My wife approved of It, saying it was first rate. "'Well.' said I. 'It's all finished ex cept n nnme.' " 'A namel You have one right thero In tho song you'vo written,' said my wifa " 'What Is Itr " 'Why, call It "Dixie." ' "I took her ndvlcu on that point and havo never had cuuso to regret It. 1 took a copy to rehearsal next morning, and the minstrels never left the hall uutll they could sing it perfectly. "Who sang It first? Dun Eromett Ho showed the boys how It ought to be sung, and they fell right Into the spirit of the thing Immediately. I continued to slug It every ulght from IS.'iO until the war broke out. Then tho Union reg- Imeuu going south sang It, and the bands played It Finally the southern- era adopted It as their national tune, and so It becamo associated with the south." There Is an amusing Incident con nected with "Dixie" that hos evoked much laughter. One night a typical southern gontletnan came Into the Bry ants' dressing room and said, "Show mo Mr. Erauiett." Upon being Intro duced to that gentleman he exclulmcd In nn Inimitable southern manner, "Are you the nuthor of 'Dixie?'" Upon Mr. Kmmctt replying that ho was, he said: "Well, sub," as ho placed both hU bands over Mr. Kmmett's right hand, "shake, by Gawd, sahl I am happy to know you, and I would rather be tho author of that song than I would be of 'Old Hundred,'" nnd continued shak ing Mr, Kmmett's hand. Kmmett wns born In Norwalk, O. "Docate," ns ho was called, was n mu sical genius, particularly ns n violinist, was a groat mimic and singer, oven ns a boy. Ho wns made up of mirth and music. While yet In his teens his violin playing was pronounced wonderful, al though entirely self taui'ht. Ho used to "blow and strike" for his father, n bluckstnlth, and when at rest always tool; up his flddle. The villagers gath ered to listen whenever tho sounds of tho Instrument were heard, nnd they were often moved to tears by the sym pathetic, tender playing. Frequently ho seemed to bo carried awuy by his own music nnd was utterly oblivious to his surroundings. She Wlna New Government Ofrtce. Houses Poured, Not Erected, by Edison's Latest Plan. WORKED ON IT 8EVERAL TEARS. Wltnrd Invent n Strong nnil Chenp Cement With n Steel Skeleton nnd the it Concrete, Urlck nnd Stone ml Skilled Lnhor, He Clnlma, Are Done Aim) With. Thomas A. Edison, the wizard of electricity, has discovered how to make "Portland cement" at an extremely small cost, fays the New York Journal. ThU statement at first thought seems to be comparatively unimportant, yet Edison knows tiie Immense value of his discovery. Ho expects that his cement will drive out quarried stone and brick as building materials. And the wizard foresees ns th eesult of his discovery that It will cost very little to build houses nnd that therefore rents will InJ very low. Ho foresees "small palaces" renting for $10 a month. He foresees tiiat when houses built of his concrete and steel frames are erected tho Are Insurance compa nies will go out of business. With ce ment so cheap a house will be "pour ed," not bullded, and the pouring of the house will occupy but n few days. The house will bo habitable when the con crete solidifies. The secret of making Portland ce ment at n cost so small has only lately been discovered by Mr. Edison. For several years he has been working on the cement problem and the problem of making cheap and practical storage batteries. Both Inventions havo now been perfected. Insurance Engineering In Its cur rent number contains nn Interview of Its editor with Mr. Edison. The in ventor says that cement combined with steel will bo the building material of the future and continues: "My Impression Is Hint tho time will come when each contractor will havo standard forms of bouses, 20 or CO varieties. The forms will be made of wood, and a contractor, using one of the standard shapes, will simply go out and 'pour n house. There will probn bly be hundreds of designs. The con tractor will put up their concreto mixer and hnvo their beams and forms ready They will pour the form for the first story, and so on. "To do that nil they will require will be common labor, u few men and one boss. That Is what I think will be done eventually. And such n house can he made very cheaply. It seems to mo there will not be much use for car penters then. Thero will be cabinet makers, to be sure. Why, oven the floors and stairs will be mndc of con creto." Mr. Edison wns asked If portland cement would bo cheap enough for general use. "Yes, I think so," he said. "When the price of cement gets to be $1 n barrel or $5 u ton .mil the people know they can get It for that, thero will bo enormous quantities of It used." Tho Inventor said that one part of cement, three parts of sand nnd five parts of broken stone woutd be tho mixture for concrete and that broken stone wna better than broken brick. Mr. Edison, In reply to a question ns to the thickness of walls in tho ordi nary workman's house, said: "The bottom course ought to be of Portland cement 12 Inches up to the first story nnd eight Inches nbovo tho first story. The roofs will bo of cement also." MINER'S ODD DISCOVERY. Imprint of Sfan'a I'not Found In Place of Conl. A strange discovery' mny make Pitts ton, Pn tho Mecca of historic research Students are scouring tho city In the hope of finding John Slllnskl, a miner, who has In his possession a piece of coal hearing the Imprint of a human foot, says the Now York World. The lines are distinct, and there Is absolute ly nn doubt that It Is genuine. Three prominent business men of the city have seen the specimen nnd pro nouueo It a wonder which will deny the verdict of science that tho earth was uninhabited during tho "coal age." Many specimens havo been found In the Plttston mines during the past few yenrs of fish and strange vegetation, but never anything showing the pres ence of human beings. John Slllnskl some time ago while working In his "chamber" came across a strange strata of coal. On examina tion ho wns horrified to see tho Imprint of what seemed to ho a human foot. For days he spent his Idle moments reading books on tho subject. When olTered a good prlco for his discovery, ho refused nnd became frightened. He has not been seen for days.
