Tho mayor and all tho aldermen wore present oxcopt Aldorman Mullen. Whllo thoro was practlrnlly nothing else done, much dlscu. .on nroso about n waterworks man to look af ter tho system, and about a street commissioner. It seamed to bo tho opinion of tho innyor to separate tho work of the street commissioner from tho woiklng ot tho strcot and collecting of tho money. Tho mayor thought It would bo a good Idea to add a llttlo moro to ho clerk's salary and let him col lect tho money from tho strcot work ers. Ho could notify them by postal card, and If thoy failed to como for ward and work or pay, turn their namo over to the police Judgo and ho could handlo Jhcm. Tho strcot commissioner, tho mnyor thought, would havo plenty to do to look nttcr tho streets, and then they would get a man that thoroughly un derstood strcot grading. Ho thought tho council should boo to It, too, that a tnorouglily competent man bo se lected for tho placo one that under stood working tho street. It wns ascertained from reports handed In from tho othor streot com missioners that there woro 1110 men In the city who woro subject to streot duty, divided ns follows: First ward 317, Second ward 208. Third ward 175, Fourth ward 37C. total 1,100, making $3,300 tho city should collect for street and nlloy money, provided all paid In preference to working. To go back to tho waterworks ordin ance. Tho prlco to bo paid by a fam ily of five or loss for ono opening Is. $9 per annum, to be paid quarterly In advance. In order to get this water. it you own your own promises, you must first pay tho city J2.60 for tap ping tho main and then hlro a licensed plumber (which llccnso cost tho plumbor $50 per annum) to do tho bal ance of tho work.
