Wood constantly submerged In wat'-r never rots, simply because there Is Insufficient supply of air. This condition accounts for tbe sound ness of the old Baltic piles. On the other hand. If wood can be kept air dry it will not decay because there will then be too little moisture. Th timber used by tho Egyptians will last Indefinitely so long as It Is bone dry. There are a great many cases, how. ever, where it Is Impossible to kfep wood submerged in wster, o- in an absolutely air-dry condition, in fact, a large percentage of the timber of. which Is used Is exposed to the weath'r, and is subjected to decay simply because. It contains enough air and nough water for the dieotn posing organlems to get a foothol I, Deay is most serious where the at mosphere is warm and damp, because these conditions are most favorab' for its development In the 00a 1 wines of Pennsylvania timber decavs In two or three years because the temperature is warm and constant and the air is damp. And in the, aouth. the warm, humid atmosphere! often causes the timber to rapidly decompose. Decay may be prevented by two general methods, by treating the wood with aHtlsrpt!c, thus poisoning the food supply of the o-ganNms which cause decay and by treat !nx It with oils which render it waterproof. A combination of these two methods Is most rommonly used, as when wood is treated with creosote which fills up the pores in the timber and keepr out water and lg also n powerful an tiseptic. Tbs United States government con alders the Investigations of the pre servatlvo treatment of timber of such Importance that the business of one branch of a bureau in the department of agriculture the "office of wood, nrnmervntlnn " In tlio fai-a.. .a..,),.. 1 t Washington, Is given over entirely to the work of experiments In co operation with railroad comuanie 'J and Individuals In prolonging th.) life of railroad ties, mine props, bridge tlinb. rs, fence iosts and trans mission poles. Advice and practical assistance Is furnished all who ro quest Oils advice of tho forester.
