THE CARTER COUNTY FARMERS' INSTITUTE IN ANNUAL SESSION AT THE CITY HALL FRIDAY OFFICERS ELECTED FOR ENSUING YEAR. With but few farmers in attend ance the annual meeting of the Car ter County Farmers' Institute was held Friday afternoon in the city hall. Following are the names of the officers chostm for the next year: Walter Colbert, president; R. L. ScoM, vice president; N. H. McCoy, secretary and treasurer; Robert F. Scivally was chosen a delegate to the state meeting the second Tues day in August Ho l)e held at Still water. R. L. Scott was named as alternate. The state meeting is im lortant for the reason ithat the dele gates who attend will elect two mem bers of the board. The executive committee of the institute consists of Walter CoObert, R. L. Scott, J. B. Spragins, J. R. Pennington and A. Watson. J. S. Murray presillfcd at the meet ing and there were no dull momenta In the program. Mr. Murray made an address to those In attendance in which he outlined the work of the board. Mr. Wilson, also a member of the board, made a speech in which he urged the farmers ito use the hoard more than they had been doing. He spoke of the different serums that the agricultural kileipartment furnish ed free for stamping out diseases among stock and said a man would be sent into a county to help stamp out any disease among cattle, horses or hogs. His speech was one of in terest, j Mr. iMurray spoke of ithe work that had been done Iby co-operatlnjt with the federal agricultural men in the boys' corn club movement. He told of the results of intensive farming in Jackson county where for the last two years the rainfall has been insignificant. Boys in that county who followed the instructions of the government made eighteen bushels of corn to the acre -while farming according to the old meth ods resulted in absolute failure. Mr. Murray read from the Ard moreite the names of those who bad contributed funds for the corn prizes and said that others might give to increase the membership of the in stitute, if the institute raises cne hundred dollar or two hundred dol lars in membership fees the same amount can (be collected from the county funria and (be money used In igving agricultural prises. He i LOT AND FOUND. LOST Scotch collie pup about 5-mo.-old. Liberal reward paid for return to A. C. Finder please leave at Ardinoreite office. 11-2 a'so stated that a variety of crops must not be overlooked. Oklahoma according to statistics raises just one-fourth of the number of chickens it should raise, in order to be up with other states of a similar pop ulation. Mr. Murray's speech was one of much interest, and during the win ter and spring lecturers will be tent to this county to visit the country districts to talk with the farmers. One of the interesting features of the work is the short courses in agriculture that are given free to boys. One loy and one girl from Carter county will be selected to attend a short course this week in Tishomingo. Their selection was left in the hands of the president and secretary aniji they were in structed to apioint Mrs. V. A. Nib lack as chaperone. A resolution was passed declaring in favor of an agricultural fair in the fall of 1911 and notifying the commissioners according to the state law that the fair would ask for county aid in raising funds for prizes. Hardy Dial, sjieclal lecturer with the board, addressed the people on the subject of soil preparation and the cultivation of cotton. His lec ture was extremely practical, he pointed out the results of intensive fanning and told why the results were better. While his subject was cotton be touched ujion all the crops, including the orchard. LMr. Dijj Baid statistics showed this county to produce, one year with another, one-fifth of a bale of cotton to the acre, and that the land was hampered by old methods and if the farmer used the improve; 1' meth ods and improved seed the average could be made one-half bale to the acre. Plow deep in the fall, was one of his warnings. Plow under the stalks and grass, Ibreak up the nests of the worms and the insects that destroy cotton and injure corn will be destroyed by deep plowing in the fall. Spring plowed land does not produce best results, he said. Adjournment was taken until the first Saturday in January. Notice. In the County Court of Carter Coun ty, Oklalhoma.
