The last legislature evidently mov ed by Influence which did not have the minor's interest at heart, emas culated the probate law by provid ing that minor property might be dis posed of, and all of the steps neces sary to the sale of the land taken without publication. In practical op eration, this simply meant that by a small expenditure the land grafters could go to the negro uncle or aunt and secure the -waiver of guardian ship rights; have bis henchmen ap pointed as guardian and his private attorney, the attorney for the guar dian, appraise the land, nnd sell It without notice or any competition. This has been going on on the east side of the state for ajear. In ev ery county on the east side of the state, negro and Indian minors have been robbed right and left. The courts have been helplesa. It has been the practice of land grafters to post notices as provided by law, nnd then hnve them torn down before the public has had a chance to find out about the proposed land sales. There Is a strong movement In the house to repeal these sections of the probate law, and about every one seems to be in favor of It. SEE IIITO THE SEAT OF LILE PHYSICIANS NOW CAN PEER IN TO THE HEART AND LUNGS AND STOMACH. A SCREEN KILLS THE HUT An Improved X-Ray Machine at the General Hospital Which. Makes It Possible to Trace a Capsule a Pa tient Has Swallowed. Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 31 Two pa tients were examined yesterday morn- ins in the X-ray room at the gen eral hospital. One had been treated a number of years for chronic indi gestion, and when examined by the X-rays It was learned that he was suf fering from cancer of the stomach. The other patient was suffering from heart trouble. Of that he was cer tain. Yet, when the patient was ex amined it was learned that he was suffering from pleurisy In the lower part of the chest. The lungs were pressing against the heart with the re sult that the heart was affected, though the real seat of the trouble was pleurisy. This much did science reveal in a few minutes. For several years the city has had an X-ray machine at the general hos pital and It has been used much in surgical cases. If a patient had a broken wrist and the surgeon In charge wished to make sure that the bones had been properly set the pati ent was taken to the operating room, the X-rays turned on him, and radio graph taken. By means of this pic ture, guesswork was eliminated; the physician knew instantly whether the bones had been properly set. Before the X-ray was invented the bones of tentimes would be improperly set and there formerly was no way to know this until the injury was healed. Then a disfigurement usually resulted. In 1893 the X-ray was invented by Professor Roentgen of Taris. At once it was heralded as a wonderful agent. Doctors began using it without thor oughly understanding the mechanism or the composition of the rays. Phy sicians couldn't understand why the rays burned when there was no heat in them. And In the few years Im mediately after the Invention a few patients and many physicians were burned. The reason so many physi cians lost their hands was because be fore turning the rays on the patient the doctor formerly thrust his hand in front of the rays to test them. As with every other Invention there have been many Improvements since 1 DR. A new machine which the city bought a few weeks ago and in stalled in the city hospital has all the latest Improvements. This new ma chine has what Is known as a fluor scopic screen which prevents abso lutely the burning of the patient and enables the rays to be focused on a patient with none of the old attending dangers. The fluorscopic screen Is made of a material which deadens the heat, yet at the same time admits the rays. In the original X-ray, radiographs of the bones were taken, though no attempts were made to fathom the mysteries of the vital organs, such as the heart, stomach and lungs. N'ow it is differ ent. When the two patients at the gen eral hospital were examined last Fri day they were led into a dark room In the basement of the building. It Is a room similar to that whlch one may go into any day a commercial photo grapher's room. Similar, with a few exceptions. Where the downtown stu dio is anxious to get much light, the X-ray room wants the reverse. There Is not so much apparatus lying about the room as in a photographer's work shop. After the patient haa been In the room for a few minutes and grown ac customed to the darkness he is given a capsule contains ingredients of a harmless kind. As the patient swal lows this capsule the physician looks through the X-ray and notes the little capsule as It passes down the esopha OFTEN MAKES A QUICK NEED FOR THE CURE THAT'S SURE FOR gus and into the stomach. The phy sician has a perfect silhouette of the vital organs in motion and he can tell instantly whether the action is nor mal. At a minute's glance the doctor of today learns by actual sight what the physicians of two decades tried to learn through the sense of touch and by other diagnoses In years gono by. The fluoroscopic apparatus used aright is a supplement to surgery and medicine that will be necessary some day to every physician. It Is the latest contribution which science has to offer to the medical profession.
