I RECENT CONVENTION OF CITY OFICIALS IN NEW YORK ARE DEEP LY IMPRESSED WITH OUR PRODUCT, AND IT IS BEING WELL ADVERTISED BY THEM AS THE REPORT OF THE ENGINEER WILL SHOW. Again Ardmore breaks into the lime light through the medium of Its as phalt deposits. Last night at the meeting of the city commissioners the report of the city engineer wh attended the recent convention of city officials In T-Tew York for the purpose of standardiz ing street specifications was read and ordered spread upon the minutes. The report which follows shows that Engineer Myers was getting in some good work for Ardmore and as phalt, and that the rest of the dele gates were deeply impressed with what they heard and saw. The city commissioners met In reg ular session last night but aside from routine business of the different de partments little else was done, a com munication was read from the So grave company of Columbus, Ohio, stating that the new fire auto truck ordered some time ago would be ready for delivery In about thirty days. Thl 4 truck Is to cost $1.7:u, and is o" Hie very latest model, an order was also issued to make the second pay ment of $1 2.-.O. on the road building j painted. "Ardmore Rock Asphalt, Ard machinery owned bv the city. more. Gentlemen: I herewith hand yon a report of my labors at the conven- tion of city officials for the standard- i.,: ,.f .,-Q,t aniflnntinna tioid in ' New York city. January 10th to 14th and the results thereof. Mr. Downai'd forwarded to me a box of our various asphalt rock and sand and samples of pavement - made of same, together with a large quantity of literature. This was exhibited In the convention hall and created a large amount of interest and comment iimnnir the various delegates who came from cities all over Ihe Vnlted i States, 2S.1 cities being represented by from one to twenty delegates. A full line of the samples were placed in the rooms of the committee on asphalt and I was given all of one morning to explain and to discuss the merits of the Ardmore rock asphalt with the result that T succeeded In having a specification for rock as phalt pavement placed in "standard specifications." t tried through Mr. Frank Fowler, president of the association, a ier sonal friend of mine, to get a place on the asphalt committee, but was unsuccessful. I think, however. I ac complished as much good, or more, in tho way of advertising our city on the outside as I would have done bad I received the sought for appointment. I was placed on the committee on concrete which discussed thoroughly concrete foundations, curbs and gut ters, and sidewalks and (prepared specifications for the same. This com mittee's report, after a full discus sion by the convention nnd after a few minor changes were made, was unanimously adopted. The committee on asphalt was com nosed of six engineers nnd four chem i.io uih rr rmi.r rtiv ni?inoor of Omaha, chairman. T was asked for ehemical analvsis of our asphalt. but was unable to give it. At my re- (quest the chemists wore instructed to ,,!.., , nnnlvsis an.l renort the same to the executive committee of tho as - solution later. They wore instruct ed to report what, in th-ir opinion, would be the simplest and most prne tical method of determining the rich ness or percentage of bituminous pitch ( ontaircd in the crude material a: delivered at the plant in order that :i uniform product might result from tho mixed as: halt rock It was Tiara to convince the committee that we uso,i nothing but the natural stone and sand bearing asphalt and that we did not use any fux, nor as far as I know, had any analytical tests of the prepared asphalt been made as it left the plant for the street. It wa upon this statement that the commit tee was instructed as above stated. Owing to this and several other re n.ay appear and make bid on new plans. ' Ordered that we hereby stand ad journed until next regular monthly mreting. Monday, February 6th. 1911. Witness our hand and seal this the ,irth day of January, A. D. 1911. j ROBT. F. SCIVALLY, 'Chairman Board County Commlsslon- i ers. I Attest: I potts that are to go to the executive til 1 111 Itioo Mm tii'inted records will be somew hat delayed, but I think will be out in about six weeks and our city will get six copies. On the last day of the convention we were invited to stay over for the regular tr.eetirg of the American So ciety of Civil Engineers who were to discuss good roads and particularly oil ns a dust preventative and as a binder for the top course of a mac adam street. The specifications for oil finished macadam approved were almost .precisely the same as siecifl cations I have written for S street, southwest, except that they were made for heavier -traffic than we will have, and hence the pavement was made thicker. After receiving this invitation, I had two boxes made divided into com. partmontfl and filled them with sam. pies of our asphalt, both limestone and sandstone, and a sample of tne completed pavement. On one side of the boxes I had Five Years' Use and Jiai.mi uepaiis. One of these boxes was lett at tne Engineering societies mulcting ana the other at the American Society of Civil Engineers' building. Our asphalt, -whenever seen, ere- ated a large amount or discussion among tho engineers and our city was congratulated on all sides for having enterprise enough to send a delegate to New York. The following is a copy of a letter left for me by Mr. Frank Fowler, president of the organization. Mr. Fowler was formerly deputy commis sioner of public works of Chicago: "My Dear Mr. Myers: "Sorry to miss vou, and not to say good bye Your city, the smallest by popula tion In the convention, has surely profited by its labors as has no other. "Your asphalt product has been dis played and explained by you to the many delegates, thus drawing atten Hon to your city and section in a way that can but. mean a bu.'U'j 'repres sion for good. "I am coming down o pee you some of these days. If you hear of any thing good, let me know. "I congratulate your enterprising city in having you. Goodbye. "Yours sincerely, "FRANK T. FOWLER," The following from the Rutherford (N. J..) American, soaks for itself: "I J. Myers, city engineer of Ard more. Oklahoma, has been visiting his sister. Mrs. Hunter, of Kip Ave nue. Mr. Myers ha9 been attending the convention of City Officials of the I'nited States in New York. He Is an enthusiastic citizen of th new- state, and his town with a population of a little over 8,000 has a profitable municipal water plant." Mr. Craig, chairman of the asphalt committee, will come here and person ally investigate our pavement In the near future In conclusion. I will say that l ! omitted no opportunity of advertising mr state, and particularly Ardmore, and that our city represented Oklano- " a. as there were no oeiegau-s ,rum 'any other city in the state Respectfully submitted.
