Paris, April 14. A statue of Sitting
Hull, the Indian chief, tho work of
"Walter Wlnans, tho llaltlmore eculp
tor, proved one of tho sensations of
the annual exhibition of the National
Society of Fine Arts, which was open
ed today. The blood-thirsty old chief
of the DaUotas Is depicted mounted
on an Indian pony. The material of
which tho statue Is made is very cost
ly, being a mixture of silver and
bronze. Critics declare It to be a
very daring work, and It was the cen
ter of Interest for the great crowds
that took advantage of the Good Fri
day holiday to attend tho Inaugural
of the Salon today.

well known In the socioty of both
America and Europe, and Is a sports
man, an all-round horseman, a hunter
of big game and a crack shot. It was
only recently that ho surprised his

the past few years, many large Inter
ests in southwest Texas nave spent
ast sums of money in constructing
lirigatlon plants along the streams
This work has been done In the most
substantial manner, dams of the most
modern type have been built of ce
meat re-enforced with steel. These
have been constructed at points along
streams which will give the greatest
pcols of water over low lands unfit
for agricultural purposes. Some of
the pools are so large that they will
hold water enough to Irrigate a large
territory for two years. In addition
to the dams and pools constructed,
great pumping plants capable of lift
ing 3,000 to 5,0(10 gallons per minute
have leen Installed. Just now many
of these are ready for service, but it
transpires, as the result of weather
conditions, they are not needed this
year. Rains have filled every stream
Is Texas, farm lands are In better
condition to Influre crops than before
for the past ten years. More rain
has fallen on what was once known

the first of January than was ever
known before at a corresponding ro
rlod of the year. Tho oldest Inhabi
tant can not recall so much rainfall or
a season when every condition was
so piomislng. It can truthfully be
said that southwest Texas Is abloom
with crops as It never was before.
In addition to putting the lands In
perfect condition by cultivation, the
fatmer finds himself with everything
at hand that insures success. The

Little Daughter of Felix J. King
Thrown From Buggy,
The little daughter of Felix J. King
was the victim of a runaway accident
yesterday. While crossing Broadway,
near the Ardmoreite office, the shaft
connection broke and let the shafts
hit the horse's heel causing the ani
mal to run. He ran the buggy into
a telephone pole near the Hudson
Houston Lumber Co.'s yard and be
came free from the vehicle dashed
up Washington street. The little girl
was thrown from the buggy and
slUhtly bruised. She was taken to
the home of W. R. Burnltt and medi
cal aid summoned.

greatest military .parade ever seen in
the United States in time of peace
will take iplace at tlhree o'clock p.
m., April 18, when the entire army
in camp at the military post under
command of Generals darter and
Duncan will parade through the city
of iSan Antonio as ai military unit,
equipped In every detail as for army
service during actual hostilities.
Nothing approaching this in magni
tude has ever Ibeen seen in the
United States since the days of the
rebellion. The army thait 'Will march
through the streets of this city will
be greater In umler than the insur
gent forces of Mexico which are
now In an armed dispute in that
republic. More than 18,000 men, In
fantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers,
signal service, hospital corps and
mountain batteries will participate
in this demonstration, in every sense
of the word it will ibe a patriotic
demonstration complimentary to the
Battle of Flowers Association that
each year celeibrates one of the turn
ing points in the history of Texas
the. memorable .battle of San Jacinto
'when the sturdy ipioneers fired by
the tune of an old love song and
shouting "Remember the Alamo,"
"Remember Goliad," put to rout the
Mexican army under Santa Anna and
thus forever made Texas free from
foreign rule. It is estimated that
it will require three hours for this
grand review to pas a given point.
Governor Colquitt and other state

ry circles, will review this parade
from a stand erected on purpose
for this occasion.
