OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 29 Mayor F.d P. Smitli, victim of
two attempt at lynching Sunday afternoon, died at 1:30
o'clock thin morning as a result of injuiir received.
OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 2H. An attempt to lynch Mayor
f".. P. Smith was made this afternoon by the mob which
Inter hanged William IJrown, negro, to a light pole. Th
mayor tonight i in a critical condition at a local hospital.
A rope wa thrown around hi neck and ho wa pulled
off the ground twice before two police officer ucceded
in cutting the rcpo and getting him into an automobile and
away from the mob.
The mayor had ynnf to the courthoue and held a con-
uttation with Sheriff Clark. Tmerging from the court
houte, lie met the mob and began to make an appeal for
law and order. Somebody khouted "lynch him" and a
member of the mob threw a rope around hi neck. Half a
dozen men dragged the mayor half a block and threw the
loot end of (h rope over trollqy pole. Twice they drew
the mayor' body from the ground. Each time two police
officer cut the rope. Following the econd attempt thee
officer succeeded in getting the mayor into a police mo
tor car and rushed him to a surgeon's office nearby. The
mayor was bleeding from hi mouth and nose, and after
n brief examination by physicians, wa taken to a hospital.
At the hospital it wa stated by the physician at midnight
that he wa still unconscious.
Hi face and body were badly bruised by being dragged
by the mob.
