In hrtvinii booked Mcry Pickford for nn engagement . at the Mnjestic theater starting Sunday, July 10, I am re minded of times long since past, when "one and two reelcrs" were popular with the theater-going public, and when this "self-some star drew the same applause and de lighted audiences in the same manner as she docs today. It is indeed remarkable to note the unusual grip that Mary Pickford has upon the fans of America and that of the entire world. Having once attained the leadership, she has never relinquished her right to the top pinnacle of film fame. Slurs have COME and stars have GONE, yet this charming personality of the screen stays ON and ON, winning more admirers with her clever impersona tions and her truly artistic efforts on the silver sheet. In the days of tho old "Biogroph," when D. W. Griffith directed for that company, a mere whisp of a girl essayed principal parts. Her characterizations were well nigh perfect, and she elicited great praise and applause for her effort. Patrons of the theater would come to the box office and ask who she was, but in those days the Bio graph company would not divulge the names of its players. And so Mary Pickford grew up to "big girlhood" and then to "womanhood," and at each period claimed the pecrship of any artist on the screen and was so pro claimed. Whether in productions of others or for her self "Little Mary" stood firmly in her tracks on the top most ring of the ladder of fame. There arc hundreds of girl slurs in motion pictures, hundreds more Hearing stardom yet none can equal the masterly hold on the public, nor approach the popularity of Mary Pickford. She is all artist, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Every role has the Pickford mannerisms, whether it is a "pout," u smile, a giggle, o laugh, a frown, a flush of anger each dissolving perfectly and meant for something important lo the play. I have presented Mary Pickford's pictures from her apprentice days until her big fight for stardom was con cluded. I have since presented her in super-special pro ductions that make expense figures stagger. She is always the same perfect artist, wonderfully talented, and her appearance a signal for entertainment satisfaction. True, there is always someone who will declare that they know a host of stars that arc the peer of Mary Pick ford. But where? Popular? Yes! But for how long? Ten years ago Mary Pickford gripped the top and she is still the "champion." Her new production is entitled "Through the Back Door." It is a play for Mary Pickford. It is just another vast success. And if you doubt that Mary Pickford is the greatest woman film star in the world, if you want to know just why she has attained and held the leadership just see "Through the Back Door," coming to the Majestic Sunday. iW 1 ?W ffe'iwJ w fit I m urn ,m ii r iiiiuiuiiL-.uj-rMr , j.,.,uu.i..ii til wm MADV I h III Wmm I in I S.IIUH i - 'Tfl ssraJ r ri ffliM.riirrr-mear'f-lanfliW U. 13
