New Jersey Senate Passes a Bill
Over Governor Werts' Veto.

In the Legislature at Trcntou.
Albany, March 18, —Ono of the largest
calendars that ever confronted tho present
3-year-old senate was on the desks of the
members when tho gavel fell. There was
a very large lobby present. The lobbies
and halls were particularly active. Sen
ator Guy handed up tho minority report
in the Troy election matter. There was
no debate.
Senator Cantor made objection to t he
progressing on the calendar of the gas
meter inspector abolition bill. Ho con
tended that it should not go to third read
ing, us the senate had agreed that H
should have a hearing on Wednesday next,
After some discussion, in which tho sen
ators got mixed ns to how tho bill had
been sent to third reading, tho matter
was dropped until the bill could be reached.
Tho assembly was slow in getting to
work. The attendance of members was
light, hardly a dozen members of tho mi
nority being in their seats. The speaker
handed dovm l lie annual report of the
state geologist.
Mr. Norton made a vigorous attack on
Mr. J. I*. Colo's bill, on the order of sec
ond reading, authorizing the city of Troy
to issue $ 100,000 In bonds (or the purpose
of extending certain streets and remov
ing a hill known as Mount Olympus. Mr.
Colo said it was for the purpose of giving
work to idle workmen, lie moved to
strike out the enacting clausa Tho mo
tion was lost, and tho bill was progressed.
Mr. Pavoy's bill to abolish tho depart
ment of public charities and corrections
In tho city of Now York and providing
for tho establishment of two separate de
partments was recommitted to tho cities
committee fur amendments.
The following bills were passed; Mr.
Nixon's, appropriating 110,001) for horti
cultural Investigations and experiments
in tho Fifth judicial district; Mr. Wray's,
providing for Hocusing dogs in Brooklyn.
The senate took up the final passage of
bills, and a large number of minor code
bills and sectional measures were passed.
Among tho important ones wore Mr.
Howe's, allowing the state to reimburse
tho county of Tioga for disbursements
connected with tho Lehigh Valley railroad
strike; Senator loamy's, compelling sher
iffs to keep open office from 9 a. in. to 6
p. m. in winter and 8 to 6 in summer;
.Senator Reynolds', appropriating $175.
000 for Improvements to the Forty-sev
enth regiment armory, Brooklyn; Mr.
Whlttot's, ratifying actions aud proceed
ings of park commissioners of Buffalo
and ordering payment for work doue by
their order; Mr. Kelsey's Lining Jones
Peck claim bill for furnishing tho stone
for tho Buffalo State hospital ; Mr. J. 11.
Clark's, appointing a certain number of
voters to each precinct of a voting ma
chine; Mr. Armstrong's, appropriating
$19,600 for improvements to Brockport's
Normal school ; Senator Persons', for re
pairs at B raddock's dam and for improv
ing docks 31 and 33 of tho Krlo; Mr. Sic
bort's, authorizing Buffalo to take parks
for school purposes.
The senate received Hie resolution of
tho assembly relative to a joint commit
tee to consider tho question of tho trans
fer of the Kings county asylums to tho
state.

Thknton, March 13. —Tho house of as
sembly passed Senator Rogers' bill provid
ing for tho formation of four oolorocl
companies ol national guard—ono each at
Camden, Trenton, Newark and Jersey
City ; also tho senate bills making wom
en eligible for appointment us commis
sioners of deeds and prohibiting the Imi
tation of any label, trade murk, etc.,
adopted by any labor organization. As
semblyman Benedict introduced u bill to
have electrocution take the place of hang
ing as a mode of capital punishment.
Governor Werts signed tho bill Intended
to lessen blindness by providing that
nurses must report to local boards of
health all cases where Infants are bom
with defective eyes. Tho house adjourned
until Wednesday morning on account ot
township elections )>clag held today.
Tho senate passed over Governor Worts'
veto tho elective judiciary and the com
panion bill abolishing t he lay judges as
judges of the orphaV-' court. Senator
Daly spoke in favor of sustaining tho veto
and Scrthtor Voorhces in favor of tho bill.
Tho vote was a strictly party one. The
seqato passed a resolution for final ad
journment of tho legislature on Friday,
March 33, providing the house concurs.

New Orleans March 13. —Tho deci
sion handed down by Judge Righter in
the Olympic club case removes every ob
stacle that stood in the way ot glove con
tests before the chartered athletic clubs of
this city. Consequently there is nothing
to prevent tho Olympic or any other club
from bringing off tho Corbett-Fitzsim
mons mill.__
Relieving Restitution In St. John's.
St. John's, N. F.. March IS.—Thedluf
tribut Ion of the goods sent from Boston to
relieve tho suffering families of New
foundland has begun. The supplies have
boon distributed to every denominational
relief depot, and large forces of volunteer
helpers are engaged in tho work of prepar
ing the flour, beef and meal for tho appli

Mr. Colona Resigns.
Washington, March 12.—B. A. Colon»
of Virginia, assistant in charge of the
coast and geodetic survey, has resigned.
Mr. Colona has been connected with t he
survey during the last 36 years, and his
resignation is understood to b« the result
of differences existing with bis superior
officers ns to the conduct of the service.
Carnegie'* Armor Accepted.
Washington, March 18 -The navy de
partment has accepted 315 tons of harvey
ized nickel steel armor, nearly half the
aide armor for the battleship Oregon,
made by the Cjprnegie company as the re
sult of a trial of an IS inch plate at Indian
Head.
