CHICAGO, March 25.—At least eight women perished In a fire which to-day de stroyed a six-story building at Nineteenth and W'avash avenue occupied by U. Fish and Company, furniture dealers, number of bodies has been recovered. The dead: Tthol Klnkelsteln, 1«. Jumped from sixth floor and died half an hour later. Five others not yet Identified. Tho missing: Myron Boll, advertising manager for Fish and Co.; H. H. Mitchell, brolher-ln law of L. Fish; Bert Sinclair, clerk; Thomas Sullivan, clerk: Veronica Mc Grath, Rose Brunsle, Ethel Anderson. That Mrs. Burden, Mary W'argo and a girl named Sullivan, all employed by Fish A Co. At least three are numbered among the unidentified dead, but which one» Is not known. The lire started when a boy employed In a cigar concern on tho flflh floor attempt ed to fill « cigar lighter with alcohol. Ho (gnlted tho liquid. Tho building was equipped with auto matic elevators whose, doors closed tight shortly after the fire started. This check ed the spread of tho tire through the ele vator shaft but also made It difficult for occupants of the building to escape. M. D. Glner. who was on the sixth floor pried open tho elecator doors, grasped the steel cable within tho shaft an dslld down to the ground. Both hangs were terribly mangled. Isaac Fish of !.. On Wednesday a strange man went Into the Shockley store and after purchasing three pounds of butter presented the check in payment and ^ns given the dif ference In cash. The check was drawn to the order of B. Ford and was signed by O. G. Gooden. After receiving the change the stranger departed with his butter. The police were notified and arc making an Investigation. Ö. G. Gooden Is a real estate dealer In this city. He denies that he Issued the check. HOUSE HAS NEW RULES COMMITTEE WASHINGTON, March 25—The House to-day formally elected the now rules committee, the members of which had been sofected by the caucuses of the two parties. The Republicans are Representative Dalzell, Penna. ; Smith, Iowa; Boutoll, Illinois; Lawrence, Mass.; Fassett, New York, and Smith, Calif. Tho Democrats are Representatives Clark, Missouri; Underwood. Alabama: I Dixon, Indiana, and Fitzgerald, New York. Representative Currier (Republican, New Hampshire,) chairman of the Re publican caucus, presented the resolu tion railing for the election of tho en tire committee. He explained that the Republicans had been named In the order of rank, the rank being deter mined by the length of service' in the House. Where the term of service, was the same, the men had agreed upon their respective work. Representative Clayton (Democrat, I Alabama,), declared that the Demo orats had sent in the names in the order of the number of votes received. W. Sturrup. alias Frank W. Smith, allas William E. Multan, a discharged petty officer of the United State« Navy. Captain Charles W. Wright, of the Secret Service Operatives In Baltimore has In his possession several aI leget) fraudulent drafts and checks said to have been passed by Sturrup. Ac cording to the authorities, Sturrup has In his possession a facsimile of the seal used by tho Navy Department. The seal la made of rubber, and each of the cheeks offered by Sturrup are said to bear tho Impression of the seal on the back of the paper. According to offi cials. Sturrup has obtained nearly a thousand dolars in the pest few weeks. He Is now supposed to be In Mary land. That he was In Maryland a week ago is attested by the statement that he passed several bad checks In Havrö de Grace. The checks passed in Havre de Grace were drawn on the Equitable Guaran tee and Trust Company of this city were signed by a navy paymaster and on the back of the cheek was stamp ed the seal of the Navy Department. Chief of Police Black received word sevaral days ago to keep watch for tho ■nan, but he Is not thought to be In Wilmington. • The Equitable bank officials said to day that no cheeks Issued by the man had as yet been received at that In stitution. Sturrup Is said to have Ijeen operat ing in Delaware when he came near fallng Into the hands of a Secret Ser vice man. The discharged sailor Is said to have managed to escape from Wilmington by boarding a fast freight. The next day, It is said he appeared In Havre de Grace and passed a $20 draft. Hallman, cashier of the office. Mr. Hallam became ill yes terday afternoon and was taken to bis home. No. 1114 West Eighth street, in a cab. About a month ago Mr. Hallam fell and Injured his leg. It has been giv ing him more or less trouble elnco then, and an abcess developed. It was operated upon to-day and Mr. Hallam is getting along nicely. He expects to be buck at the office on Monday. It is one of the few times In fifty years that rM. Hallam has been absent from the office, and he was missed by Ute regular patrons.
