NEW CASTLE, Feb. 14—Prompt aclion by volunteers prevented what threatened to bo a serious fire at the residence of John J. Sheridan, South Fourth street. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective flue, and the piano and parlor furni ture were badly damaged. Shortly after 3 o'clock, Michael Hendlcr discovered the fire, and ac companied by Officer Lewis and other citizens, rushed upstairs. Grabbing the blankets and quilts from beds in other rooms they fought the flames.. Mean while the chemical engine of the Good Will Fire Company had arrived, but did not go into scrviçe. The princi pal damage was to the furniture and rugs. The smoke blackened the pa per In several rooms, and the piano, pictures and fuiniture in Ute parlor are practically rhined. The water which was thrown on burning nigs In the parlor leaked through the floor above the grocery atore. REPORT MADE ON ANTHRAX Council Receives Interesting Communication From Board of Health An interesting communication on the matter of anthrax was sent to City Council by the Board of Health last night, pursuant to instructions from City Council, requesting an in vestigation of conditions at the ware house of F. Blumenthal and Com pany, morocco manufecturers. Two weeks ago Councilman Jacob Zim mermann offered a resolution in Council providing for the Investiga tion because of three cases of an thrax that occurred among employes of the company, one of which re sulted fatally. This resolution was passed and the Board of Health sub mitted its report last night. It fol lows; To the Honorable Members of City Council, city. Gentlemen: This board has made a very careful investigation, of the condition, alleged to exist by your honorable body at the warehouse of the P. Blumentbal Company, and found that there had been four cases of anthrax, contracted by their employes in handling the raw goal hides as shipped Into this country form China and India. Of the four cases, one died, the other three are recovering. Anthrax is a disease belonging to the bovine family and is only trans mitted to the human being by in fection from direct contact (that is that there must be a cut or abrasion on the body for the germ to lodge), this disease in the human being Is en tirely local and will only affect the parts on which the cuts or abrasions are located.
