Among the American Newlnns many hava been clergymen. The founder of one brilliant line of th* name was John Newton who came to Virginia In 1070, and settled In Westmoreland county. Among his descendants Was Willoughby Newton who married Bully Bland Poythress. Their «on. Willoughby married Mary Brockenbrough, daughter of William Brocken* trough, of Virginia. Thla family was also opnneoted Willi the family of Carter Broxton, signer of Declaration of Independence. Wil loughby and Mary Newton lived et Linden In Wcstmorelaufl county, Virginia, and there was born John Brockenbrough Newton, ono time coadjutor bishop of Virginia in the Episcopal Church. John Broeken breugh Newton began hie career as a surgeon and was surgeon in the Confederate army during the Civil Wa war he determined to churoh. but so that his family need not went he continued to practice surgery while he was studying the ology at home. In Philadelphia there was a New ton family established by Richard Newton, born in Liverpool, Eng land. In 1813. He came with h!s Richard Newton In 1823 and the from 1801 to 1803. After the enter the settled In Philadelphia, where he married Lydia, daughter of Law rence Greatorex. Their son, Rich ard Heber Newton was an Episco pal clergyman of note who was ac cused of heresy on more than one occasion and was known In later life as a Christian socialist. His wife was Mary E. Lewis. Jared Newton was another Penn sylvania settler of the name, settled In Westmoreland county in early colonial days. One of his descendants was Robert Crittenden Newton, born In Arkansas, in 1840. He was a soldier in the Confeder ate army In the Civil War, a ne phew of Commodore Thomas Nel He Have You Piles?
