The attention of the voters of f latsop county and this part of Oregon is called to an arti cle on the outcome of the approaching national campaign, in its peculiar rela tion to the Interests of tho Pacific coast, taken from the Seattle Post Intelligencer, and reproduced on this page of todays Astorian. It Is an admirable discussion of the differences between the two parties and the im portance to the people of the North west of standing by the party of pro gress, and particularly the admlnistra tion of its policies as exemplified by William McKinley. The Astorian hopes every reader of the paper will take the pains to read the Post-Intel ligencer's article. "To eat or not to eat," Is one of th questions which confronts the invalid nowadays. Professor Atwater declares that we eat too much, and that much harm is done' to our health by exces- sive diet One of the most noted of English physicians. Sir Henry Thomp son, an authority on the subject of dietetics, says that more than half the disease which embitters the middle and latter part of life is due to errors in diet, and that more mischief is wrought by erroneous habits than from the habitual use of alcohol drink, gigantic as that evil is. On the other hand, many physicians and nurses are now advocating Dr. S. Wier Mitchell's theory of hyper feeding, especially in canes of scrofulous or tubercular ten dencies. In a Los Angeles sanitarium, superintended by a trained English nurse, this method of feeding has been tried in a number of Instances with most satisfactory results. Before ris ing, the patient has her cup of coffee or cocoa, with rolls and butter. At 8 o'clock a hearty breakfast Is served, consisting of steaks or chops, eggs, fruit, cereal and bread. At 11 A. M. a glass of hot milk and crackers en gages the Invalid's attention. The din ner a regular course dinner soup, fish, roast, vegetables, salad, de sert, comes at 1:39. In the middle of the afternoon another glass of hot milk and crackers. At 6 P. 11. comes a suh.stantini supper, ami at o nw another glass of hot milk for a 'nWit- cap." INTERESTS OF PACIFIC COAST. Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Until the beginning of Mr. McKin- ley's term the Pacific coast states were practically ignored in the general leg islation of congress and In the policies of successive administrations. Scarce ly a thought was wasted upon the Western seaboard. Its ports or Its trade prospects. Not a line of legislation was framed with the distinct intention of encouraging Pacific trade, or of ad vancing the material interests of the people of the Pacific seaboard. The Atlantic ports, the Atlantic shipping Interests and the European trade gov erned everything. The Pacific states were considered as mere frontier com munities, their prospective importance as factors in the future trade of Asia was Ignored, and the ardent Ideas cher- Ibhed that here were destined to ftrise great commercial cities were laughed at as characteristic Western bombast Now for the flrat time is the Pacific coast getting the recognition to which it is entitled; and It is to Its frontage on the Pacifl3 more than to any othtr crong ones In speaking about Scott's Emulsion for children, you should not forget that it con tains lme and soda, just what the child must have to form strong bones and good teeth. It's this forming time you want to look after. Crowing bodies must have an easily digested fat Just think how much of it there is in milk, as cream. sccii's Emulsion i even more easily digested than cream. Sold CHARLES single cause that the country owes the recognition of its standing as one of the great powers in the world. Today the great political issues upon which the country Is divided bear largely up on our relations with the countries bordering upon the Pacific ocean. The whole expansion idea is based upon the necessity of this country's maintaining its position as a great power cn the Pacific, and securing and controlling the trade which originates In coun tries bordering upon this ocean. It Is to the expansion of the trade of the Pacific, not of the Atlantic, that the , ' manufacturers, the ship-owners and ; the great commercial houses of the i country are now turning their atten tlon, and government policies and re lations with foreign countries have taken on a new aspect. The republicans, and particularly the McKinley administration, have inaugu rated and are thoroughly committed to the new policies which mean so much to the people of the Pacific coast; and which when carried out fully and completely to their logical outcome, will tend to shift to the Pacific states the weight of population and of trade ! In the United States. To policies in which the people of the Pacific coast have such a deep interest the demo cratic party has announced an un faltering opposition, and by every method of obstruction known Is trying to prsvent their being carried Into effect. No section of the United B tales has such a deep and material Inter est In the outcome of the national elec tion as has the Pacific coast.
