C McGlas han, a well known navigator to this port In years gone by, arrived In As toria yesterday from Liverpool, and will take a good look at the stricken ship and acquaint themselves with all facts of interest In relation to her anJ her possible future. The Japanese steamship Kota Hiro Mam, against which a fine of 5,003 was levied at this port on her recent arrival here, for being without proper consular bills of health, has been re leased from the fine upon a satisfac tory showing made by her captain and owners, to the federal authorities at Washington. Second Assistant Engineer W. H. Rober, of this city, and late of the Hill line steamers on the Trans-Pa- clflc route, has Joined the steamship Ohio, now Ik the Sound, and will K with her to the Hawaiian Islands, with the party of Los Angeles and Seattle business men, who are bound there on a quest for trade. W. It. Howen. luvompiinlod by his wife and child, have arrived hove from Milwaukee, and entered the service of S. Elmore & Company, ns rale clerk. Mr. Bowen Is an expert at his line, and was formerly connected with the Goodrich line of lake steamers nt Mil waukee. The steamer Alliance Is duo down from Portland early this morning and will make a run to Coos Bay, only, as she Is due back to Portland, for an overhauling on the dry-dock, prepara tory to her annual Inspection on the !6th instant. S. Elmore & Co. are In receipt of a telegram from the fmpqua river stat ing the recently purchased schooner, Antelope arrived there Wednesday af ter having been at sea some forty days. The schooner Alvena came down from Portland yesterday morning on the Oklahama, and cleared from this port for San Francisco with 890,000 feet of lumber. The steamer San Pedro came down the river yesterday lumber laden for the Bay City and went over the bar on the afternoon flood. The barkentine Puako and the schooner Sarah Plummer went up the river yesterday morning on the haw sers of the Oklahama. The motor schooner Gerald C. left out last evening for the Siletz, with a general cargo of provisions and merchandise. The steamship Costa Rica did not get in from San Francisco until yes Nestuoca yesterday, with nil she Is al lowed to cany In the way of cargo. The steamer Yoscinlte Is due down this morning en route to the Bay City with another big cargo of lumber. MEN'S LEAGUE TUCK ABACH EES. The Valentine social given on Thurs day evening by the Young Men's League of the Presbyterian church to the Tuckabachee Club of that church was n great success. In December the young men chal lenged the young women to a two months' attendance contest. It was accepted and the outcome had been a matter of uncertainty until the very last Sabbath when by a spurt the wo men won out, and It was up to the men to furnish "Oyster supper for all hands, and strictly home made." Tables In form of a Inrge arrow were spread for fifty-six. Decorations, nap kins, programs and everything else were of the Valentine order. The cooking was such as only men can do and even the women had no complaint. After the feast a program was ren dered, the climax of which were the most happy toasts given by Miss Nor- burg, president of the Tuckabachees, "Our Hosts," and by Mrs. A. D. Gar ner, leader of the young women s class, "The Young Men," and the re sponse by Harry Vantuyl, president of the League.
