son, Senator Charles W. Fulton.''
U was several minutes before Senator
Fulton could make himself heard so
sjieat was the applause..
Senator Fulton, when the opplaue
ul'sided, said:
'in justice ot you, my prior attempt
to take your time, will be ho,rtened.

the greatest nation on earth (great ap

States regardless of politics reeogiiinc

Vice-President Fairbanks."
U was several niinute-i before the
Vice-President could commence his re
marks. He was bowing his acknowted
meats of the ovation tendered him which
was something to be proud of. He said:
"Indies and Gentlemen: Your good
natures!, genial and cultured gentle

many kind references to me which I
think are far too fluttering. 1 refer
to Senator Charles W. Fulton (loud and
continued applausv). 1 know that you
like him. We all did at Washington
(applause). Now I will tell yuu a story
of Senator Fulton when he was in In
diana, uiv own state, lie said that the
ladies of Indiana were fine looking ladies
but he said, mind his loyalty, 'Wait
until you see the Astoria ladies', and

I think that Senator Fulton is right
(loud applause). I was born in Indiana,
not by choice, but was In Astoria and
Oregon 30 yean ago and am sorry that
I am not now a resident of Oregon (loud
pplauso). Many thousands today have
their eyes cast on Oregon, the pride of
the great Northwest and see that this
is the new territory that will enhance
the commercial interests of our glorious
nation.
At this point Mr. Fairbanks was in
terrupted by the Vice Presidential sa
lute tired from the Charleston.
I amgratified to meet you and to be
introduced by such influential men as
your worthy citizens. United States

'Why do not some of you ladies
come to Oregon, and particularly As
toria!' Astorians niV noted fur their
loyalty to their home city and I can-
but admire Scnutor Fulton's press-
invitation though I cnndidly say that
( do not admire his taste as U-twcen
the California and Oregon ladies . I
have noticed the high standard of beauty
iind grace of the ladies of Asturia as 1
have seen them and will say that I did
not come to meet statesman but after
hat Senator Fulton has told me I
came to we the ladies (applause). As
your worthy Mayor aptly said your' city

with me a pleasant memory of my visit
to the Athens of the Pacific. I happen
to know something of the early history
of Astoria. When two Hugs floated over
its boundaries; that of Givat Iliitain

lie to him one flag and that our Hug is
the only emblem that has a rightful
place in thi your beautiful city (great
applause).''
At this point iu the spiiit of the
moment Senator Fulton handed Mr.
Fairbanks a glass of water. "Sow,
ladies and gentlemen, Senator Fulton
knew thut 1 would drink that. It is
not a Fairbanks cocktail (laughter). It's
water. I meet heiw representative men
of your stat and states go to make a
nation, and our nation is something we
are all proud of. Every state is .reprc

cosmopolitan people and the best people
of our states are our representatives. We
uso our best endcavoi's to build up our
communities and nation. We do not
look with envious eyes on the achieve

gratulate them on their achievements in
the arts and cultivation. It is not

by standing for Oregon.
"I wish to thank you for your cour

me a pleasant remembrance of my visit
In the western athens of thp sea."
Senator Fulton was a happy master of
ceremonies and In his joviwi manner kept
the audience in god humor. Calls wciv
made for many distinguished men on
the platform and in response Governor
Chamberlain, Congressman F.lli. Hon.
Gh. II. Williams, Hon. H. M. Cake and
others responded. After the-e speech?
the. audience disN-rsed with three cheers
for Vice-lreiileiit Fairbanks.
