if .r POPULATION 3.500 Jamestown, the metropolis and trade ceote of the upper James River Valley, Is the county eat or Stutsman county. It is equidistant from Fargo and Bismarck, about one hundred miles from each, and is located on the most beautiful site along the line of the Northern Pacific Railroad, between the bluffaand the banks of the James River. The machine and repair shops and headquarters of the Dakota division of the Northern Pacific, and of he Jamestown & Northern railroads are located here and it is the shipping and distributing point for the vast scope of country to ihe northwest reached by the latter railroad. Jamestown has a graded public school, incl tiding a high school coarse, occupying two large school buildings and employing eleven teachers. It con tains six handsome church edifices, and its popu lation! numbering 3,600, Is made up from the best and most enterprising classes of the northeastern and northwestern states. It is surrounded for fifty miles In every direction by the world-famed wheat lands of the James River Valley, which furnish an immense and inexhaustible support to evary department of industry and commerce. Its hotel accommodations, business blocks, mercantile and commercial enterprise are not Burp/iBBod by any city in the territory. Griffith is representing Hie Methodist church of this city in the con ference now being held at Tower City. Census enumerator B. S. ltussell went to New Hockford yesterday to appoint and set to work an enumerator for Eddy county. J. J. Frcy left at this office yesterday a sample of barley over a foot and a half iu height the product of his farm south east of the city. Mr. Jackson McAbee, of Gettysburg farms, near Melville, is in the city a guest of the Metropolitan. He ports creps booming up in that vicinity. The citizens of Valley City have pledg ed $650 for Fourth of July expenses pro viding a three days encampment ol mili tia, beginning July 3d, can be secured. The beautiful sward of blue grass grow ing to luxuriantly in Mr. Durstine's doer yard shows that this grass will grow nice ly wherever proper care is taken to pro duce it. Pleasure excursions to Spirilwnoil 1-ike are frequent now and the trip is most enjoyable one for the ride over the coun try as well as for the boating and fisliirg on the lake. Another line rain visited this vicinity yesterday afternoon. Farmers living in the city drive out to their farms nearly every day so as to keep track of their crops which would grow out of knowl edge in a few days. Travelers say the wheat all along the line of the Northern Pacific railroad through Dakota looks tine. The farmers in this city say they never saw crops look so well at this time of the year. Every body is catching on to the buoyant spirit. As Inquiries for land and town lots in cieases, our real estate agents begin to wear the wonted smile of boom days, which was remarkably childlike and bland. Our exchanges from all parts of the territory tell of the glorious rains recently and of the prosperous condition of the crops. It looks like history repeating itself to Me the portly form of W. \V. Dudley perambulating our streets, lie and his wife and little daughter arrived in tbe city yesterday morning and will remain several days visiting with their numerous frieada in this city. Jacob IUinger, of Elroy, Wis., arrived In the city yesterday morning with two car loads of atook and farming imple ments, household goods etc. Mr. Klingcr has purchased a farm a few miles narth of the city and has come to take up his permanent residence here.' City clerk A. C. McMillan, is now en gaged compiling the ordinances of the city for publication in book form. The task ia a laborious one and it will no doubt be carefully and thoroughly per formed by Mr. McMillan, who as an at torney is capable ot doing it properly and well. Thos. Driscoll let tbe contract yester day afternoon for his new brick building in the burnt district. It is to be 22x70, two atones, with basement. Architects Gtove & Lewis drafted the plans. The recent copious rains have put the ground in the best possible condition for breaking. The base ball club will go over to Steele tomorrow to play the nine of that place a match guicc. All who intend to accompany the club should notify Gene Thomas this forenoon who will give all necessary information as to railroad fare and accommodations. Notwithstanding the unfavoiublc weather last night the base ball club ben efit dance at Summers Bros, rink was largely attended and a most enjoyable time was had by all. About ninety couples were present most of whom join ed iu the merry maze of tbe dance, which, at one o'clock last night, was letting "joy be unconfined." There were 111 tickets sold. The CSrand Lodge A. !•'. & A. M., and Grand Chapter of the territory will hold tueir annual meeting at Fargo the Sth, 9th and 10th inst. The convocation will be the largest of the kind aver held in the territory. On the evening of the !Hh Shiloli Lodge No. S, and Keystone Chap ter No. 11 will give a grand reception to the visiting delegates, and on the evening of the KUli a grand social ball will be given. At the annual meeting nf the Presby terian congregation Wednesday night, E. P. Wells, AV. C. White and Juo. S. Wat son were elected trustees, the latter in place of G. It. Toplifl resigned. O 11. Hewitt and W. II. Burke were elected eldera. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. White, Mrs. Jno. S. Watson, Miss Eloise 1 licks and Mr. I larence Smith were appointed a mu9ic committee for the ensuing year. Ileatli of SI s. Cham In rs. It was with deep feelings of sorrow that the people of this city learned Tues day afternoon of the death of the wife of our townsman, Mr. A. (!. Chambers, though not a surprise as her daugerous illness had been knowu for several days previous. Her sulTerings were intense though all in mcdical skill anil human power was done to alleviate them, an eminent physician of St. l'aul having been called in consultation. Mrs. Cham bers was a lady in tbe highest sense of the term and was universally respected and esteemed by our people. Being of amiable disposition and possessing many accomplishments she was a favorite in the society circles of the city which will sadly feel her absence and sincerely mourn her death at the very noontide of life, she and Mr. Chambers having been married less than two years. The funeral services was held at 12A', yesterdny, by llev. N. D. Fanning, pastor of the Presbyterian church, at the resi dence on cast Main street. Her remains were taken to Newcastle, Pa., the home ol her childhood and early womanhood, to be laid in final rest by th« side of kindred dead. Taking the Census. Yesterday Mr. B. S. Kussellcommenced taking the census in the city and the work will be diligently prosecuted until completed which must be done this month. Air. ltussell has appointed as his assistants in this county Ilarry Cornwall, who is at work in the southwest part of the county. Mr. Blew, at work in the northwest part of the county, and Jacob Laux, at work in the southeast part of the county. B. I. ltussell has charge of Foster and Wells counties in which lie is assisted by C. E. Gregory and A. II. Mad dock, of Carrington. It, is desired to make this census not only complete iu the enumeration but a reliable and exhaustive compendium of statistics in regard to the present stage of development of the country. For every farm there are just one hundred questions, and every farmer should prepare himself in advance to answer them fully and jor rcctly. The census is being taken hy authority of law and every person is re quired under penalty of the law to an swer the questions to the best of his or her ability that are giyen on the blanks furnished the enumerators. Those statis tics have no relation to nor connect ion with taxation. The Insane Hospital Contract. Pursuant to published notice the board of trustees of the North Dakota nsane Hospital met Thursday to consider the bids for the construction of the new ad ditional buildings. The full board of tiustees, consisting of president, Maj. Lyon, secretary F. E. Jones and M. E. Foley, of this city, Dr. Kennedy, cf Ordway, and Judge I'rye, of Faigo, were present. Judge Frye moved the suspension of the tegular order of business, that they might proceed to the opeuing of bids, which was agreed to. The bids were as follows: W. B. Plattenberg Jk Kankin being the lowest bidders, and in every way re sponsible, the contract was awarded them, which will be consummated upon the filing of the required bond and its ap proval. It is especially gratifying that Jamestown contractors were awarded the contract, and it is natural that it should be so, for they are bettsr acquainted with the cost of labor and the transportation of material than foreign bidders could be The shrewd contractor will always give himself the benefit of the doubt about any part of the expense of constructing a building, and as our home contractors thoroughly understand from the lessons of experience al.uost accurately the cost of labor, material, and its transportation they have less doubts to provide for on the safe side.
