Deborah damson was teaching school in 1778 in Plymouth, Mass., while men were going away to battle. Deborah felt the urge to help, but men laughed. So she made a plan. She announced she was going to New York In search of work and started out on foot, carrying a bundle. Well beyond the village Deborah disappeared in a grove of trees. At the far tide of the grove appeared a young man. At dusk the figure entered Medway, and applied for enlistment at the home of Nathan Thayer. Robert Shirtllffe was the name giv en. It was before the days of physical examinations for applicants. Private Robert Shirtllffe served three years. Robert was an energetic soldier and proved it in a hot skirmish near Tarrytown, N. Y., when Robert was cut by a saber. Private Shirtliffe woke up in a hos pital after a long fight with' fever. Dr. Blnney of Philadelphia took an inter est in Private Shlrtliffe's recovery and on the soldier's discharge gave Rob ert a letter to Gen. Washington. (Jen. Washington's blue eyes shot a keen glance at the young soldier be fore him. Filling out a document he handed it to the soldier, who when outside, saw it was an honorable dis charge, with an informal note of thanks. After peace Deborah Samson, then Mrs. Benjamin Gannet, received a grant of land in return for services of Private Shirtliffe' during the revolu tion. MORE PARTIES RISE IN NORTHERN CHINA Shanghai, July 7.—The situation In North China, according to reports re ceived here, is becoming mpre com plex, and several parties have arisen with the avowed purpose of displac ing General Chang Hsun, now in power. The bureaucratic republicans, head ed by Tuan Chi Jul, already are marching toward Peking with Tuan at the head of an army division. Feng Kwo Chang, former vice pres ient, is declared to be making at tempts to become the head of the provisional government at Nanking. Republicans here are endeavoring to persuade Li Yuan Hung, the de posed president to leave Peking and come to Shanghai.
