N. Briggs, who checked up the money. The men report that everywhere thoy went a generous spirit was shown, and in no case were they re fused money where the people were able to pay. The result of the day's work last evening amounted to $629.50 with one committee yet to be heard from and the Red Cross gleams from all the windows of the city today together with the Christmas wreaths and the holly and the mistletoe. EAST SIDE BRIEFS Clarence Hoverson of Manvel was a business visitor in the city Saturday. Ole Basgard of Esther township spent the latter part of the week in the city on business. Stephen Zipoy returned Saturday from the S. A. T. C. at the University of Minnesota, from which he received an honorable discharge. B. G. Grazca is here from New Tork, where he is connected with the medical department of the army. Aft er a few days' visit with friends, he will leave for Little Falls to visit with his parents. He has had four years in medicine, and came as far as fc ort Snelling on a hospital train. Charles Martin, who is attending St. Thomas College, St. Paul, is home for the Christmas vacation. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Kella and daughter are leaving today for Illi nois", where they Will make their fu ture home. William Sullivan has returned from the Minnesota S. A. T. C.. having re ceived an honorable discharge. The baby daughter of J. C. Giese of Tabor died yesterday, aged 26 days. Peter Weberg of Alberta, cousin of Mrs. E. Arneson, is here for the holi days. Gus Thorp has received a letter from his cousin, Gilbert Thorp, who is a prisoner in a German camp. The letter was written before the signing of the armistice. Little news is given except that the prisoner wishes he could get back to his comrades. James Evans returned from Chi cago and will for the future reside with his mother. Mrs. Anna B. Evans. BOLSHEVISTS DEFEATED AT EKATERINBURG Report of Big Battle Is Of ficially Dispatched to Russian Embassy. Washington, Dec. 23.—Defeat of the Bolshevik army on the Ekaterinburg front in a decisive battle by an army of loyal Russians, was reported today in an official dispatch to the Russian embassy from the Omsk government. The measure said the disorganized Bolsheviki were retreating northward toward Peru, and that this was the first independent action of moment against the Bolsheviki and part of a campaign that was expected to unite some of the loyal districts of Russia and Siberia. Much war equipment arM booty was completed. The embassy also was informed that Attaman Doutoff. commanding the Cossack troops of the Orenburg re gion, had asked General Semenoft to submit to the authority of Admiral Kolchak, dictator of the Omsk gov ernment. It was indicated in the cablegram that the people of Siberia were united in support of Kolchak. CASSEROLE OF LEFT-OVER VEGETABLES. 1 cup turnips. 1 cup peas. 1 cup diced sweet potato. 1-2 cup asparagus. 1 teaspoon extract of beef. Drain vegetables, put in layers In greased baking dish. Dissolve the extract of beef in hot water and pour over the top, bake until the vegetables are thoroughly heated. TURKEY GIBLET SOUP. To prepare turkey giblet soup cook the heart, liver, gizzard and neck for three ,or four hours. Bones from roast turkey from which the meat has been cut may be added to this stock. Skim off the grease. Strain through cheese cloth. Reserve the giblets and particles of meat for meat pie. To the stock add one cup of celery cut in cubes and one-fourth cup of rice. Cook until the celery and rice are tender. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with croutons. MOCK DUCK WITH APRICOTS. 1 forequarter of mutton. Salt and pepper. 1 can apricots. Select a forequarter of mutton with a length of the leg bone left on. Trim to resemble a duck's bill. Rub with salt and put a moist stuffing between the layers of meat Sew the edges to gether and shape into an oval like body, keeping in place with skewers. Notch the gristle for a tall and fasten with twine. Dredge with stilt, pepper and flour. P. 1-4 t. salt. 3 T. melted fat. Sift dry ingredients together, and add slowly the milk, beaten egg yolks and melted fat. Fold in stiffly beaten whites. Beat thoroughly for a min ute and cook in hot well greased waffle irons. Potato Pan Cakes. 1 c. riced potato. 1 t. flour. 1 t. salt. 1-4 c. milk. 1 egg beaten. Corn Floor Griddle Cakes. 1 1-2 c. flour. 3-4 t. soda. 1-2 t. salt. 1 c. sour milk. 1 egg. Cakes and Cookies. 100 Per Cent Substitute. Barley Sponge Cake. 1 1-3 c. barley flour. 1 t. lemon juice. 1 c. sugar. 1-8 t. salt. 4 eggs. Method of mixing sponge cakes: Separate whites and yolks Beat the yolks until thick and lemon colored. Bake in an ungreased pan for 35 or 40 minutes. Start in a moderate oven (185 degrees C. or 365 degrees F.) and when half done raise the tem perature to that of a hot oven (205 degrees or 400 degrees F.) Add prepared cranberry Juice and boil 5 minutes. Add sweetening boil, until it gives the jelly test. Turn into glasses. A large proportion of cranberry may be used if desired.
