Au$. 14.—The Hotel Men's Show. h«!d Isusi. week In connection with conventions of the Illinois Hotel association, the international Stew arils' association, the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit association, and the Northwestern Hotel Men's association, was one of the largest exhibits of manufactures relating to the hotel in dustry ever held in this country, it was said, and so successful that the show is ,:o be made an annual event in Chicago, according to F. W. Payne, te manager and the vice president of' the International Exposition com pany. '•There are to be two big meetings of the hotel men each year," he said, "one Sri the spring and the other In the fall. The" first will be held in Chicago and the second in New York." Special interest- attached to the re cent show because of the desire of the hctel men to learn how their com petitors were planning to meet the changed conditions brought about by national prohibition. Questions along this line were answered at the show by the taking of exhibit space by five limes as many producers of soft drinks, soda fountain supplies and equipment as had ever before exhibit ed at a similar exposition. Changing Ban. "The hotel men almost without ex ception are turning their bars into soda water fountains, ice cream par lors, coffee rooms or cafeterias," Mr. Payne explained. "Many have al ready affected the change but probr ably the majority are studying the possibilities of various plans as ap plied to their particular locations." The makers of fruit extracts and fountain supplies demonstrated at the show that there was no lack of va riety of soft drink possibilities and only a few of the offerings were reminiscent of the "old days" when "drink" meant, liquor with a "kick." Various cereal beverages were "dem onstrated" and served free that had something of the appearance of beer and root beer was served in the old fashioned and sizable glass "dwvn ers," while the fruit extract people proclaimed with placard and voice the virtues of certain of their non alcoholic mixtures under such titles as "fruit h'ghballs" or "lime rickeys," indicating that they had borrowed a leaf from the enterprising bartender of yesterday. On the other hand all the advertising of the drinks display ed emphasised that they were non alcoholic or non-intoxieating. Manufacturers of soda water foun tains displayed elaborate installations of mahogany, marble and plate glass mirrors but there were no brass foot rails. Exhibits of hotel glassware in cluded many shapes of wine and champagne glasses but it was ex plained the sole demand for these now was as containers for soft drinks, ices, ice cream and sundaes. Makers of cafeteria and lunch room equip ment and furniture had numerous displays and claimed to have taken raany orders. One of the great quests of the hotel men who have converted bars to soft drink establishments was said to be hot drinks that, in addition to cof fee, tea, cocoa and the like, will prove popular ertough to maintain' the re ceipts from the "bars" through the winter months. UTTLE IS KNOWN REGARDING HEAD OF SOUTHERN GULF Tucson, Ariz., Aug. 14.—The head of the Gulf of California today is al most as much of an unknown sea as It was in the eighteenth century, when the Spanish padres. Kino, Garces and Cum:-, made their first cfude map of it. This was the statement made by Professor Godfrey Sykes of the desert laboratory, University of Ari zona, recognized authority on the Gulf, in connection with plans now under way to build a railway from Ajo. Arizona, to Bay St. George at the head of the great inlet of the Pa cific. "In 1540-1642 the head of the Gulf of California was explored and roughly mapped out by the Alarcon expedition," said Professor Sykes. "In the eighteenth century Kino and his priestly co-explorers added to the in formation in 1829 Lieutenant Hardy of the British navy surveyed it in 1851 lieutenant G. H. Derby of the United States topographical survey carried out a reconnaissance survey there, and in the '70's Captain, later Admiral Dewey, reported on hydro graphy, meteorology and general con ditions. "Tides at the head of the gulf are very heavy," continued Professor Sykes. "Some I measured there showed a vertical range well over 40 feet. This record is exceeded only on the coasts of either of the Americas by the tides of the Bay of Fundy, "At the head of the gulf lies Rocky Point Bay, which I am inclined to be lieve could be developed into a ship ping port for southern Arizona points. '7n 162 Major Ferguson, under or ders from Edward M. Stanton, secre tary of war, led an expedition from Tucson to the gulf via San Xavier, Sahuarita, Ariva.ca, Sasabe, Altar and the An grout ino Pass to Libertad, and reported.that a railroad could be built over the same route should future conditions warrant it." BULGARIA TO HOIjD ELECTIOW. Paris. Tuesday, Aug. IS.—(By the Associated Press) Parliamentary elections will be held in Bulgaria Aug ust 17. It appears probable that the agrarian party, of which M.
