All tbe Dis tricts were represented by either elerical or lay members, and some ol tnem By boin After a somewhat lengthy interchange of views the committee unanimously passed the following resolutions: . o - - ' Resolved Itt. That the Western Reserve Seminary at Farmington and the Collegiate Institute at Willoughby should be commended to nnr nooolau esDeciallv in their respective localities, as highly deserving objects of liberal contributions. 3d. That all unspecified contributions should be apportioned as follows r one-half to go to the General Educational r und, u other half to Alleghany College and the seminaries, riving the College one-half and dividing the balance equally among the seminaries. - , i The Committee had under consideration the question of local church building, and church extension, but came -to the conelu ion that a Centenary contribution were de signed to be extra and general, it would not be proper to make the ordinary eontribu tiont fur church buildings answer th pax pose or take the place of a Centenary gift. Moreover, as church extension, is t be an object for annual contributions, the Com mittee did not regard it as an object of Cen tenary donations. Both reports were referred to the Commit tee on Education. 1 The Third Question, "Who shall be ad mitied into fall connection," was then re- sumed, the examination of the character the candidates having been postponed, yes terday for want of time. On motion, Bev. G. W. Patterson wa con tinued on trial at-hi own request. - Revs- A. 8. Goodrich, David Late haw, J. B. Shear er, and J. W. Schofield were admitted to full connection. When the case of Rsv. . A. Ludwic was examined the charge of breach of promise was brought against him by Rev. H. Kinsley. Mr. Ludwick is a young man of about twenty-five years oi ape, of pleas ing address and fine person, is a graduate of Alleghany College, an excellent scholar, a finished writer and effective speaker, and it regarded a one of the , most promising young men connected with the Conference. His name has appeared upon the Minutes for several years, though he wssl absent daring the war in active service 1: the field. "Enlisting when the war broke out in a cavalry regiment, he was elected Captain of his company, and by gallant an meritorious service rose tof the rank of Colonel, and returned in command of his regiment with an honorable record, having lost hi right arm by wounds received in battle. At some time during his term of service, a marriage engagement with the daughter of prominent member of the Conference, wa broken off, 'a he asserts by mutual consent. The friends" of the lady in question accuse im of desertion and a wilful misrepresentation of the case. Last year the charge was brought up before the Conference, and for some unexplained reason, no investigation was made, and this year the charge is" again renewed, as, he comes before the Conference asking admis sion to full connection and ordination. A motion was made by Rer. R. A-.Caruthers that he be admitted to full connection and ordained, subject to future investigation. A sharp discussion arose, which showed the existenoe of two strong parties,'' each ef which made vigorous efforts to secure the sdoption of it well defined policy. The motion was carried, however, by a large majority, and Mr. Ludwick will be ordained as Deacon with hi class, to-morrow. ' Bishop D. W. Morton delivered a very happy and telling address to the parents and children.- Little Jimmy Phillips, a bright lad of five or si summers, sung " Corns to Jesus," with such distinctness and power that he was heard by the entire audience. Hit voice seemed wonderfully sweet and plaintive, and the andience atood in perfect lilence until th song was ended. He promise to become his fathers rival, and that before many year. After Mr. Phillips had sung f Wa are rising aa- a people," ana - iiome o tne Soul," the congregation was dismissed with the Doxelogy. The exercises were all ad- mirably eoadueted and of unusual interest throughout. -: , -. . EVENING SESSION. The anniversary of the M. E. Missionary Society-was held this evening in the Pres. -bjterian Church. Addresses were delivered by several of the most prominent men the Conference. - Phillips conducted the singing. - - . - In the Court House the arguments m case of Rev.. I. 0. Fisher, charged with 'forgery, were made before the committee. The case was opened by Rev. E. J. L. Biker. E. A. Anderson, Rev. W. F. Wilson and Dr. M. Hill followed for the defense, and final argument was made by Dr. Clark. A little more than two hours was occupied in the review of the esse, and the evidence was then placed in the hands of the com mittee for final act ion. Tbe committee will report in epen Conference on Tuesday. soon as their verdict is made public shall give a review of this mysterious and intricate case, which is unparalleled in annals of the church, an anomaly in history of crime, and equally inexplicable whether we suppose the accused innocent or guilty. ' PHILLIP PHILLIPS. of Phillip Phillips, v the sweet singer modern Israel " is the Musical Editor of Methodist Book Concern, New York, probably is more widely known and exer cises a greater influence than any other member of this great and flourishing church organisation. A few years ago he began teach music instrumental and vocal Marion, Ohio, at the same time acting agent for Piano and Melodeon Manufactu rers, New York. At that time he did dream of the rare power of his voice. After a year or two ho was ind-sced to go to cinnati and open' rooms . as an agent for musical instruments. There he rose once to the most unbounded popularity. sang in Sabbath Schools, in day schools in public assemblies, and it seemed that people could not hear enough of him. Hi first attempt at compiling and writingson resulted in title volume called Musical Leaves, which was very successful.' He h just issued an ingenious book called -the Singing Pilgrim, which is a transfer of Pilgrim's Progress of old Bunyan into son It is hardly out of the press and 78,000 have, been ; -ordered. ; Mr. FhiTlips hp more of the elements of a strictly pop ular singer than any other man living. is very pleasant in address, easy in manner but not st all remarkable except a a sioger. Hi voice is full, rich and powerful and well trained. But beyond these there is a won derful powsr of expression. , The grand hyms, sung by him, are endowed with new spirit, and his simple "Pilgrim songs are full of sacred and thrill ing melody. In Mrs power ef expression lies the Becret of his ipower and success. When he appeared for the first time to-day before tbe Conference, he sang a simple song from the "Pilgrim" and nine out often of thst dignified body were in tears before he had finished, and yet, with a single hap py turn, hechanged tears to smiles, and he reached the closing note of triumph fervent, old-fashioned Methodist " amana made the old walls of the church resound. TEH PRESIDING BISHOP. ef Bishop E. R. Ames is a model presiding officer. It is no light task to control a Con ference composed ef two hundred and fifty mem; trained to rule rather than to be ruled, and unaccustomed to the checks and re straints of deliberative bodies; yet, while following apparently no fixed and estab lished rules, he maneuvers the unwieldy force with consummate generalship and compels it to comprehend and do the work before it. He presents every topic and item of business clearly and briefly. He forgets nothing and gives no subject undue promin ence Every topic is taken up at the proper time, is thoroughly considered, and prompt ly and finally disposed of. Hit person and bearing mark him as a man of great strength and vigor, both of body and mind, and it is impossible ta mistake the iron will and steady courage that look out of face. Born of Puritan stock and schooled by the rough experience of pioneer life the woods, at twenty studying at Athens with Triable, Herr and Clark, and support ing himself, teaching for a i me, and then entering the ministry, he "has grown up step by stop through every grade until h bear the highest honor in the gilt of the harch. He is thoroughly a business man. His meth odical mind reduces everything to system; he always takes the broadest views of sub ject with which be deals, and yet neglects not even the smallest details. He is somo time arbitrary, but is always impartial and just.
