HOW IT WAS DONE.
Details of tho Capture of Dune in, tbe Forging
Banker—The Modus Operandi of Detective
Work.
[From tho 8. F. Chronicle, 24th. |
Joseph Duncan, the notorious
fugitive bauker, who has given the
police more I rouble than any other
criminal since the early days of
the city, and who hat been the
cause of more newspaper comment
than any other individual of purely
lecal celebrity, was captured this
morning shortly after midnight by
Capt. Lees, the Chief, and a squad
of trusted officers. Tlie clue which
led to the capture of the famous
criminal was derived indirectly
from tbe recent chase after him
over the bay, which is so fresh in
(lie public mind. 11 is hiding place
was at 009 Kearney street, a large
three-story brick building near the
corner of Sacramento. On Friday
evening Capt. Lees retired to
OSCAR LEWIS'S SALOON
On Sutter street, where he met
youcg Willie Duncan, and the ret
icent Tom Van Ness, who has been
the close friend nf the Duncans
since his escape, with their counsel.
The evening passed in desultory
conversation, principally in refer
ence to the case. Captain Lees had
laid a deep plan for thu capture of
the fugitive, however, and, as will
be seen, carried it out successfully.
Later in the evening the party pro
posed to repair to a restauraut for
oysters. At that moment, howev
er, Stewart Menzies, whose yucht
Blame played so important apart
in the night chase a week ago, en
tered the saloon and engaged Cap
tain Lees in conversation. He
therelore had
A OOOD EXCUSE
In declining the invitation press
lngly extended to join the party in
supper. Tlie party left Lewis's
and repaired to an oyster saloon on
Bush street, nnd Captain Lees
sauntered along Kearney street
with Mr. Menzies. At Pine street,
after a few moments' conversation,
Captain Lees succeeded lit leaving
his companion ou tbe pretense that
he was very greatly exhausted and
desired to go home. Mr. Menzies
departed for his residence aud the
Captain hurriedly repaired to the
vicinity of the oyster saloon, where
he patiently
AWAITED THE CONCLUSION
Of Ihe supper. In a half hour thu
party sauntered slowly out and at
the corner of Bush nnd Kearney
streets separated. Captain Lees
glued his watchful eyes on a par
ticular member of the party, and,
pulling his COat-DOllar about his
neck and his hat over his eyes, de
termined to follow him. lie dog
ged his footsteps lor an hour or two,
until ho saw him meet another
man, whose features tlie Captain
succeeded iv retaining iv his mind.
He then left for home and slept
contentedly Until yesterday morn
ing, when he arose fresh Tor the
day's work. Tna Captain took
upon himself the duly of
TRAILING THE PARTICULAR MAN,
And let no persnu but his superior
into the Becret. Yesterday after
noon he happened upon the indi
vidual of whom lie was iv quest,
and followed hira closely to the
house No. 509 Kearney street. His
actions before reaching the door
way, and the manner of tils en
trance through the portals, con
vinced the Captain that his Mown
bird was there concealed. He
tracked the man to a particular
room where bis entrance was gained
in a very mysterious aud careful
manner, and the Captain was still
more convinced. He waited some
time for the man to emerge from
the room, but Anally
RELINQUISHED THU WATCH
And left for the City Hull, where
he ut once set on foot the prepara
tions for a raid upon the suspected
room. Last night, at midnight,
there were gathered iv the office of
the Chief of Police, under the
especial direction of that official
and Captain Lees, the following
officers: Detectives Meagher, Jones,
Johu and Dan Coffey, Cox, Byratn,
Gardiner, McQreavy, MoDermott,
T. Kelly, Moorehouse, Bee aud
Davis. They knew not the partic
ular duty to which they were to be
assigned, but they were well as
sured that there was something
important on the tapis from tlie
pleased expression on the faces of
LEES AND THE CHIEF,
And their frequent whispered con
sultations. Each was bidden to
look carefully after his revolver,
und to be on hlsstilct guard during
the job. Shortly after midnight
the party left the Chief's office in
couples, slowly und as apparently
on their way home after a day's
work. Along Kearney street, on
both sides of the way, they walked
slowly but nervously until 509 was
reached, when ull of the darkly
clad figures glided into the open
doorway, us if seeking a lodging
above, and
NOISELESSLY ASCENDED 1 IIE
STAIRS
To the lirst landing, where the
men were disposed on various de
tails. When the officers reached
tbe head of the stairs a German
resident in the house was aroused
by tbe creaking nf the steps, and
putting his head out of his door,
took out Ills police whistle, aud
blew it lustily. In a twinkling, a
dozen revolvers were at his bead
urging silence, aud after a whis
pered explanation, the affrighted
German retired to bed.
A number of men were sent to
the roof, another party iv the rear,
where every possible avenue of es
cape could be closely watched, and
the remainder were disposed at in
tervals through the hulls of the
house. The room which was
to be the central point of
attack was located in the third
story, fronting ou Kearney street.
At a quarter after 12 Lees knocked
at the door, aud, as if such untime
ly visits were freqeunt and expect
ed, the door was calmly opened and
the Chief and Captain walked into
the room. In a remote corner of
tbe apartment, on a low bed, lay

known figure of Captain Lees, he
jumped up in bed with eyes wide
open, and mouth agape, tlie picture
of dismay and astonishment.
Lees drew a revolver, and point
ing it In Duncan's direction, re
marked, "Don't move a peg or off
goes the top of your head!"
Duncan dropped back on the bed
with the feebly uttered response, "I
haven't any arras, Captain. There's
no danger whatever."
CAPTURED AT LAST.
He was requested to arise and
dress himself, which lie did with
out apparent hesitation. He was
attired iv a gray woolen shirt aud
drawers, and when fully dressed
wore a slouch hat aud a Bhort, sail
or's jacket. He was taken to the
private office of the Chief of Police,
where lie *,ol<i Captain Lees that it
had beeu, his intention to give him
self up in a few days. The Captain
dispatched a messenger with a note
to summon his sou Willie.
CELL NUMBER FIVE,
in the New Prison, was fitted up
with new mattresses, etc., and
father and son were locked iv for
tbe night, the latter being granted
a request which he urged upon his
arrival.
The long missing banker is won
derfully changed in appearance,
and he might, probably, have walk
ed the streets without attracting
atteution except from some partic
ular friend. His face has grown
thin and shrunken, his eyes hol
low ami expressionless, and he
looks as if
THE CEASELESS HUNT
After him had worn him down in
mind and body. When he disap
peared he had but a chin-whisker,
and now he has a mustache and
full, long beard.
Captain Lees and his detectives
deserve the greatest credit for their
untiring efforts in the search after
Duncan.

A friend induced him to go ashore

was wrecked ou tbe North Carolina

ly after tho same officer fell in with

conversation one of them observed.
"You Euglish do not know how to

should get a sack, and put your

Among the prisoners of Plevna
was M. Olivier Pain, ono of the
leaders of the Paris Commune. He
was secretary to M. Rochefort, and,
having esoaped with him from
New Caledouia, was sentenced to
death. Last year be entered the
Turkish army, aud obtained a com
mission. As lie was a Frenchman,
aud a correspondent of a newspa

to St. Petersburg aud give him up
to the French Ambassador there.
M. Putn, however, preferred to re

urged that he had every right to be
treated as a prisoner of war, as he
had actually fought iv the Turkish
service. He deems a prison in
Russia preferable to the guillotine
which awaits him in France.
Pixley and the Pope.
We were in Rome. The politi
cal embarrassments of the Pope
aud King were recent. Rome had
been declared the capital of united
Italy, aud Victor Immanuel bad
secured the palace of the Quirinal
as the royal residence. The Pope
considered himself the victim of a
conspiracy that had deprived him
of the States of the Church, shorn
him of civil power, and made him,
in fact, a prisoner in the palace of
'the Vatican. The solemn ceremo
nies of the Holy Week were con
fined to tbe churches. The partial
illumination of tho magnificent
dome of St. Petet's was only sug
gestlvo of the sploudid fAtes that,
at this season, were wont to be
given tbe Roman peoplo. A Pre
sentation had not been held for a
longtime. It was our good fortune
to receive cards for tho first
after a long interval. The cer.
emony of the Papal Court is
exceedingly simple. Lndies must
dress in black, gentlemen iv the
costume of gentlemen : children
muy appear in white. We were
arranged standing upon either side
of a long hall. The Pope in his cap
and white robe, preceded by one or
more Cardinals, who inquire the
names aud residences of persu- o
prasented, and introduce the:'.:' V
his Holiness hy name aud resi
dence, advances, with a smile, a
pleasant nod, and some kind word,
along the line. At his approach
we all knelt and kissed Ijiu papal
ring, a splendid jewel, a sparkling
diamond solitaiic. After lie hud
made tho rounds, ladles kissing
his hands, feet and garments, chil
dren crawling all over him, en
couraged by liis gonial maimer, be
returned to the end of tlie hall, ami
quite surprised us by a little speech
in French, the interpretation of
which was that, If we all be
haved ourselves pretty well, we
should meet in the better
world. We were surprised by the
liberality of a blessing that em
braced us all, and to all were held
out tbe hope and promise of a hea
venly reward. This blessing cover
ed not only us, but, by some fiction
of female interpretation, baskets
and arm-loads of rosaries, books,
crosses and pins, ornaments that
were brought away as gifts to those
Catholic friends who valued them
because blessed by the Pope.
The Pope was then, at BO years of
age, a handsome man, seemingly of
active habits, beardless, of pink
aud white complexion, like a rud
dy, clear-faced girl at the age when
innocence can blush. We were
delighted with him, aud if we had
any prejudices against the Roman
church we forgot them iv the
presence of this charming, gonial,
gentle old man, who called down
upon us, foreigners and heretics,
God's choicest blessings. Aud
then this incident occurred:
A stiff aud stately Englishman
ami his stiff and stately wire, whose
spit curls were pasted down her
cheeks in graceful curves around
her ears, refused to kneel. The
Pope turned his back upon them,
and did not see the paw that. John
Bull ungracefully extended for a
compromising shake. At table
d'hote that evening, at Hie Hotel
Costauzi, we heard the stiff aud
stately "awing, you know, and all
that sort of thing," in explanation
of the fact that he "could uot kneel
to the Pope, you know, for it oould
not be expected you see, that an
Englishman should get dowu ou
bis marrow bones, and all that
blasted humbug." It was a crowd
ed dining-room. We rose upon our
American ear, and beiug then in
tlie habit of stump-speaking,
we said to the Englishman,
in emphatic manner and di
dactio voice: "Yes, I observed
your very rude und unmannerly vi
olation of the customs of a court
which you were expected to know
and comply with, as tiie condition
of your presentation. I kissed the
Pope's hand, as thousands of great
er and wiser men have done for
many hundred years. To kneel be
fore a sovereigu and tho ecclesiasti
cal leader of an hundred and fifty
millions of people, I felt to be no
humiliation, and your same scant
courtesy to your own queen, In the
event you had her generous per
mission to enter her palace, would
have entitled you to a rude expul
sion." Our speech was applauded,
and the Englishman, we think,
aoquiesced in its truth, as lie only
raised his eye-glass aud remarked
"Aw!" We don't like English
men abroad.— Argonaut.
